Full job description

Overview

We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Cultural & Transitional Support Worker to join our team. In this vital role, you will provide person-centred, trauma-informed, culturally safe, recovery-oriented, and harm reduction-based support to residents participating in CMHA Kamloops' Transitional Housing Program. Working within a multidisciplinary team, you will support residents in achieving greater stability, independence, and overall wellbeing by providing day-to-day support, life skills development, crisis intervention, cultural connection, housing stabilization, and community integration. This role promotes resident safety while fostering an environment built on dignity, respect, hope, and recovery.

You work collaboratively with residents, Indigenous communities, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, healthcare providers, housing partners, community agencies, and other service providers to support successful transitions from temporary housing into long-term housing and community living.

Services are delivered using Housing First, person-centred, trauma-informed, culturally safe, recovery-oriented, and harm reduction principles.

Duties

In this role, you will:

Develop meaningful relationships with residents and provide day-to-day support using Housing First, trauma-informed, culturally safe, recovery-oriented, and harm reduction practices.
Coach and support residents in building life skills, achieving personal goals, and increasing independence.
Respond confidently to crisis situations, including providing de-escalation, overdose response, and first aid when required.
Connect residents with healthcare, cultural supports, community resources, and other services that promote wellbeing and housing stability.
Facilitate or support recreational, wellness, life skills, and culturally responsive programming.
Maintain a safe, respectful, and welcoming environment for residents, visitors, and staff.
Work collaboratively with an interdisciplinary team to provide coordinated, resident-centred care.
Maintain accurate documentation and contribute to the continuous improvement of program services.

Builds trusting relationships through a person-centred, trauma-informed, culturally safe, and recovery-oriented approach.
Has strong communication, active listening, and interpersonal skills.
Can remain calm, confident, and effective in crisis situations while using sound judgment and de-escalation techniques.
Works collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team while also being comfortable working independently.
Is organized and able to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Completes accurate, objective, and timely documentation using computer-based systems.
Understands or is willing to learn Housing First, harm reduction, and culturally responsive practices.
Demonstrates cultural humility and a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging.
Is adaptable, resilient, and committed to continuous learning and professional development.

Required Qualifications

Diploma, certificate, or degree in Human Services, Social Services, Community Support, Indigenous Studies, or a related field (or an equivalent combination of education and experience).
Minimum one year of related experience in supportive housing, homelessness services, mental health, substance use, or community social services.
Current First Aid & CPR certification.
Criminal Record Check.
Valid BC Class 5 Driver's Licence and access to reliable transportation (if required for the position).
