Full job description

Reports directly to: Production Manager

Job Purpose: The Production Shift Supervisor directs and manages all daily operations, maintenance, and personnel to maximize the capacity and efficiency of production. This position includes the overall responsibilities for safety, quality, and other activities in the plant. This role is crucial to the overall success of the day-to-day operations of the company's processing plant because their primary function is to use and establish best practices and protocols that ensure all equipment is running at full capacity. This individual models visible, positive leadership to plant workers and the maintenance team, resulting in optimal productivity, quality control and safety practices. The organization is in a period of rapid expansion, and the ability to assist the production team in implementing the needed processes and controls to ensure a world-class operation is critical to the role. The Production Shift Supervisor will be a proven leader, teacher, and team builder, able to work in a dynamic environment to manage our assets and people effectively.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Understands and leads the mechanical aspects of the operation, including the two hay presses, additional wheeled equipment and chaff presses and any other equipment used in the processing of forage.
Assists and oversees mechanical troubleshooting and repair and is integral in liaising with suppliers of the equipment on repairs and maintenance as well as ongoing optimization of the control systems.
Understands press troubleshooting, manages, and works with the maintenance team to train crews to perform basic repairs and maintenance to keep the press running.
Direct and manage all plant operations, including safety, product & process quality control/assurance, production, equipment, and site maintenance.
Interview and hires new employees. Onboard and ensure the successful training of new candidates. Work with the production foremen to create and implement a formal training process for new production employee onboarding.
Provides input regarding production job descriptions and works with accounting to help administer and manage production payroll and benefits.
Ensures semi-annual performance and development reviews are completed for all production staff.
Ensures disciplinary reviews and actions are administered, documented, and appropriately managed in compliance with the HR policies of the organization.
Complete bi-weekly production schedules. Review and communicate with Foremen about adequate resourcing for Booking schedules and Pressing Instructions.
Ensures successful development and progression of plant staff with a focus on safety, quality, and teamwork.
Provides ongoing training, support, development and mentoring for employees.
Works closely with Logistics, Inventory, Sales, and Marketing to ensure that all product is being stored, tracked, processed, and precisely moved throughout the plant and storage sheds efficiently and effectively.
Sets production goals and leads to achieving them through communication and planning with the plant staff.
Works with Production Foreman to ensure that a daily tailgate meeting is completed at the start of each shift.
Monitor weekly plant production metrics to maximize capacity and order accuracy.
Works with the General Manager to efficiently run the production team optimizing production volume and aligning resources with performance output compared to budget.
Work with the General Manager to deliver information to the finance, accounting, analytical and management teams to develop annual budgets.
Provide insight for long-term solutions to increase efficient processing operations and the management thereof, and ultimately helps build out the systems as the company grows.
Ensures prompt and accurate reporting of daily production activities by Foremen.
Work with inventory and accounting to ensure production staff is trained and proficient in Shipper XL Inventory Management System.
Implement and support preventative safety and maintenance programs and continuous improvement.
Gains a hand on and thorough understanding of each production position. Provides recommendations for process improvements, supports crews and assists Foreman as required.
Works with Production Manager, Logistics & Admin Manager, and Farm Manager to create an effective harvest management plan involving equipment resourcing, production scheduling, and staffing.

Qualifications:

Proven managerial experience in a similar capacity, with strong people management skills. Enjoys interacting with people, building, fostering, and leading a high-functioning team.
Proven history of managing an operation and leading teams to achieve increasing objectives year-over-year.
+5 years of plant/ processing experience in agriculture, manufacturing, or a similar supervisory environment is essential. Must have a mechanical aptitude.
Technical Diploma or Accredited Trade, Bachelor's Degree in Agriculture Management or a related field would be an asset.
A safety track record.
Class Five Driver's License and a Clean Driver's Abstract.
Demonstrated leadership and ability to lead and motivate individuals.
Ability to facilitate complex problem-solving through good organization, management skills, and written and verbal communication.
Optimist, self-starter, eager to learn new things and continuously improve.
Knowledge or experience in forage (i.e., Timothy, Alfalfa and Oat Hay) production and/or processing would be an asset.
Knowledge of and sufficient skill using Microsoft Office products (i.e., Excel, Office, and PowerPoint) and computers.
Knowledge of automated processes.
Track record of successfully supervising industrial operations to ensure staff is sufficiently trained and alert to prevent operator errors and incidents.
Fosters collaboration, communication, and teamwork.

Working conditions:

Must be willing to work any shifts scheduled 7 days a week, including day and night shifts and over the weekend in order to provide adequate hands on supervision.
10-12 hours per day or as needed. 50-60 work weeks will be expected.
Exposure to noise, dust, hay dust and adverse weather conditions.
Exposure to elevated levels of hay dust may aggravate allergies and asthma.
This role is onsite and located in a rural area; personal transportation is needed to and from the plant.

Physical Requirements:

Able to work during seasonal weather conditions.
Ability to stand for extended amounts of time.
Ability to lift up to one hundred (100) pounds.
Required to wear appropriate PPE in plant.
