Summary
The Cook is responsible for preparing and serving high quality meals in accordance with prescribed therapeutic diets and standardized recipes for residents in a long-term care setting. This role involves bulk food preparation, adherence to safety and sanitation standards, and the ability to adapt menus when necessary. The Cook plays a vital role in supporting the overall nutritional care of residents while ensuring a safe, clean, and efficient kitchen environment.
Responsibilities
- Prepare, cook, and serve meals in accordance with approved menus and therapeutic diet requirements.
- Ensure food is cooked, held, and served at proper temperatures to maintain food safety and quality.
- Supervise and provide direction to food service staff, ensuring adherence to safe food handling procedures.
- Monitor and maintain cleanliness and operational safety of kitchen equipment and work areas.
- Adapt and modify menus as needed, using judgment to meet resident needs and preferences.
- Maintain records as required, including temperature logs and inventory reports.
- Assist with training and orientation of new kitchen staff as directed.
- Communicate effectively with team members, dietary staff, and other departments to ensure seamless food service delivery.
- Follow written instructions and perform duties in accordance with set policies and procedures
Requirements
- Chef Training Certificate or Culinary Management Diploma from a program approved by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities.
- Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in therapeutic and bulk food preparation and presentation.
- Experience in supervising food service staff and providing instructions in food handling and preparation.
- Knowledge of proper food storage, handling, preparation, and sanitation practices.
- Experience in long-term care or a similar healthcare food service environment preferred.
- Ability to make informed decisions regarding menu adjustments and dietary needs.
- Strong organizational and communication skills; ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Physical ability to perform the duties.
