Description
The Gazette is seeking an experienced journalist to manage the news desk in a thriving print and digital weekly community newspaper. Established in 1830, and independently owned and operated, The Gazette is Canada’s oldest weekly and Prince Edward County’s newspaper of record. It has a print readership of 27,000 and a further 20,000 in digital. We are expanding into a sister site called Picton Life, aimed outside The County.
The news editor handles municipal and provincial news and politics, community news, police and court briefs, and publishes key stories to both the website and social media daily.
The Job:

Managing the news desk and assigning stories

Reporting/writing stories for print, web and social media audiences – tailoring content for specific platforms

Initiating and developing ideas for daily coverage, enterprise stories, and investigative projects.

Cultivating sources and establishing expertise across a broad range of critical municipal, provincial, and national issues

Able to use both photography and video to illustrate local events and complement news stories in digital and print formats
Compensation:
The base salary for this role ranges from $47,000 to $57,000 per year. Placement within this range depends on the level of experience, responsibilities, technical skills and alignment with the role requirements. This is a permanent, full-time position.
Qualifications
- A university degree, college diploma or equivalent experience in journalism

Ability to write clearly and engagingly in breaking news, features and short-form journalism

Rigorous fact-checking, editing, and proofreading skills

A keen interest in the role of community journalism in a functioning democracy

Experience working in a real-time, digital newsroom, and the ability to use social media as both a news-gathering tool and to boost the profile of The Gazette

Experience in photography and videography an asset; experience with WordPress and Adobe Photoshop and InDesign key assets.
The ideal candidate is committed to the values of journalism and community news, experienced in print, digital and social media publication, and able to work flexible, full-time hours with some evening and weekend commitments. This is an in-person position. Residency in or near Prince Edward County is required.
