Full job description

Position Summary

The Financial Controller is responsible for overseeing the organization's full-cycle accounting function, ensuring accurate financial reporting, regulatory compliance, effective internal controls and timely completion of all accounting activities.

This role manages accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll accounting, month-end and year-end close processes, treasury functions, financial statement preparation, and audit support. The Financial Controller works closely with management, banking partners, external auditors, and cross-functional teams to support business objectives and maintain financial integrity.

Key Responsibilities

Full-Cycle Accounting & Financial Reporting

Manage all aspects of full-cycle accounting, including general ledger maintenance, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll accounting.
Prepare, review, and post month-end journal entries to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting.
Assist in the preparation, analysis, and continuous improvement of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
Prepare month-end and year-end account reconciliations, schedules, and supporting documentation.
Ensure compliance with accounting standards, company policies, and internal control requirements.
Support management with financial analysis and reporting to facilitate decision-making.

Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable & Cash Management

Oversee accounts payable and accounts receivable processes to ensure accuracy and timeliness.
Update and maintain biweekly accounts payable cash flow forecasts and reporting.
Process monthly wire payments and ensure appropriate approvals and supporting documentation are maintained.
Monitor cash balances and support treasury management activities.

Payroll Administration

Administer and record biweekly payroll transactions accurately and in a timely manner.
Prepare and post payroll-related journal entries and reconciliations.
Ensure payroll accounting records are complete and aligned with payroll reports and statutory requirements.

Month-End Close & Journal Entries

Prepare and post month-end Visa journal entries.
Prepare and record management fee accruals and intercompany loan interest entries.
Review accounting transactions to ensure proper classification and accuracy.
Participate in the month-end close process and ensure deadlines are consistently met.

Fixed Asset Management

Maintain the fixed asset register and ensure additions, disposals, and transfers are accurately recorded.
Prepare monthly depreciation calculations and post related journal entries.
Reconcile fixed asset balances and provide supporting schedules as required.

Regulatory Compliance & Remittances

Calculate and file monthly WSIB, EHT remittances in compliance with regulatory requirements.
Prepare and submit quarterly Euler sales declarations.
Ensure compliance with applicable tax, regulatory, and reporting requirements.

Audit & Tax Support

Prepare and submit monthly provincial tax filings, ensuring compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements and filing deadlines.
Prepare year-end working papers, reconciliations, and supporting schedules for external auditors.
Support annual financial statement audits by providing accurate and timely documentation, analyses, and responses to audit inquiries.
Assist in the preparation and completion of annual corporate tax filings and related tax schedules.
Coordinate with external auditors, tax advisors, and regulatory agencies to ensure compliance with statutory and reporting obligations.
Support annual audit and tax filing requirements for US entity.
Monitor changes in tax legislation and accounting regulations and assist in implementing necessary process updates to maintain compliance.
Ensure all tax remittances, regulatory filings, and audit requirements are completed accurately and within established deadlines.

U.S. Operations Support

Assist in the completion of annual audit and tax filing requirements.
Perform monthly bank reconciliations.
Process wire payments and maintain proper supporting documentation.
Support financial reporting and accounting activities related to U.S. operations.

Qualifications & Experience

Education

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
CPA designation (or working towards CPA) is considered a strong asset.

Experience

5+ years of progressive accounting experience with responsibility for full-cycle accounting and financial reporting.
Experience in manufacturing, distribution, or industrial sectors is an asset.
Experience supporting multiple entities and intercompany transactions is preferred.
Experience working with external auditors, banks, and regulatory agencies.

Technical Skills

Strong knowledge of Canadian accounting principles and financial reporting practices.
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting/ERP systems.
Experience with payroll accounting, bank reconciliations, fixed asset accounting, and month-end close processes.
Knowledge of WSIB remittances and regulatory compliance requirements.
