Assistant or Associate Professor - Indigenous Studies
Regina Campus
Tenure-Track Position

First Nations University of Canada invites applications for a full-time tenure-track appointment in Indigenous Studies. The appointment will normally be made at the rank of Assistant Professor, with consideration of appointment at Associate Professor depending on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the full range of academic responsibilities associated with a faculty appointment, including teaching, research and scholarly activity, student mentorship, service to the academic unit and University, service to the broader profession, and service to Indigenous communities.

The position requires a demonstrated commitment to academic excellence, student success, and respectful engagement with Indigenous knowledges, communities, and ways of knowing.

About First Nations University of Canada

First Nations University of Canada is a unique First Nations-controlled post-secondary institution committed to serving Indigenous communities and supporting the promotion, preservation, protection, and interpretation of First Nations histories, languages, cultures, and knowledge systems. The University operates with the guidance of First Nations Elders and is committed to education within a uniquely First Nations environment.

Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to:

teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses in Indigenous Studies;
contribute to curriculum development, program planning, and student learning;
maintain an active program of research, scholarship, creative activity, or equivalent professional activity;
advise and mentor students;
participate in departmental, University, and related academic service;
contribute to public and community-engaged service, particularly in support of Indigenous communities; and
work respectfully with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, students, colleagues, and community partners.

Faculty duties may vary by academic unit and are assigned in accordance with the applicable Collective Agreement and academic processes.

Qualifications

Candidates should have:

a PhD in Indigenous Studies; applicants who are ABD may be considered provided they have a confirmed or anticipated completion date within two years of the appointment start date. This requirement reflects the qualifications established for this position;
demonstrated subject- matter expertise in Indigenous Studies;
evidence of effective teaching or strong potential for teaching excellence;
a record of, or clear potential for, research, scholarship, creative activity, or equivalent professional activity;
experience working with Indigenous communities, students, organizations, or knowledge systems;
demonstrated commitment to student success; and
ability to contribute to the mission and academic priorities of First Nations University of Canada.

For appointment at the Associate Professor level, candidates should normally have a completed PhD or other terminal degree and a stronger record of teaching, research and scholarly activity, service, and academic leadership.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference may be given to candidates who have:

experience teaching Indigenous students or working in Indigenous post-secondary education;
experience with Indigenous knowledges, pedagogies, research methodologies, or community-engaged scholarship;
experience developing curriculum relevant to Indigenous contexts;
demonstrated service to Indigenous communities; and
experience teaching in face-to-face, remote, hybrid, or distributed learning environments.

Rank and Salary
Rank and salary will be determined in accordance with the FNUniv/URFA Academic Collective Agreement and will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

a statement describing experience working with Indigenous communities, students, organizations, or knowledge systems;

Candidates who wish to be considered under the University’s commitment to recruiting and nurturing First Nations academics are invited to self-identify in their application.

The successful candidate will teach a total of five courses in the academic year. These courses include teaching various INDG topics (culture, history, and contemporary issues). Applicants should have knowledge of Indigenous protocols and in addition to teaching and research, be prepared to work with Elders and communities, and participate in university committees.
