Full job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

The THSP Worker will assist and advocate for women and their dependents in matters not limited to their health, safety and well-being, healing from violence and the effects of witnessing violence, access to affordable housing, and strengthen and maintain safe housing, and additional supports as needed to live violence-free.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Client / Resident Support:

Completes intakes, assessments, risk assessments
Develops safety and transition plans, including departure plans for woman and dependents
Includes finding and maintaining secure, appropriate housing, securing legal assistance, applying for social housing, connecting with community resources (e.g. schools, immigration, etc.)
Provides the necessary community supports through direct service, referrals and or advocacy in the following areas:

- Housing

- Short and long-term counselling

- Educational upgrades and job training

- Application for income support

- Legal processes including legal aid applications, custody, court attendance and accompaniment

- Cultural interpretation

- Individual planning and goal-setting

Works with Local Housing and Coordinated Access Centres to move survivors of violence and human trafficking more efficiently into affordable housing options
Applies current knowledge and demonstrates skill in the area of Immigration, Criminal and Family Law
Conducts assessments and identifies clients’ immigration, criminal and or family legal needs

2. Violence Against Women Counselling:

Works with women individually and or in groups to establish a plan that will facilitate a safe and effective path to independence
Provides crisis intervention, informal counselling, and referrals to callers
Provides crisis intervention, informal counselling for women and their children in the shelter
Demonstrates and maintains knowledge of relevant issues
Facilitates groups and workshops consistent with the goals of the THSP program
Collaborates with community partners in implementing programs

3. Administration:

Adheres to all policies and procedures of Homeward Family Shelter o/a Julliette’s Place
Completes administrative duties as outlined in Homeward Family Shelter o/a Julliette’s Place policies and procedures manuals and specific to your job description
Maintains records, compiles program statistics and prepares reports and correspondence as required
Participates in ongoing program evaluation
Ensures that clients and ex-residents/community members are aware of their rights and responsibilities, housepractices and procedures
Attends community coalition meetings and speaking engagements as required
Plans programming expenditure within budget allocation
Supervises students and volunteers as required

MINIMUM EDUCATION/GENERAL EXPERIENCE/SKILLS REQUIREMENTS:

In-depth knowledge of an academic discipline normally acquired through completion of a clinically supervised undergraduate degree (e.g. BSW or BA in Law, Women Studies). An analytical framework that identifies clients' relation to social systems and the demonstrated practical application of this framework
Certification/registration with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW) or with another related association
2 or more years of work experience in counselling and mutual-aid group work focused on the issues of clients at risk
In-depth knowledge of the dynamics of woman abuse and trauma
Knowledge of community resources and supports focused on immigration, refugee and on-status individuals supports
Working knowledge of harm reduction principles and practice
Working knowledge of the Landlord and Tenant Act
Ability to work within an anti-oppression framework
Ability to multi-task and prioritize workload
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, E-mail and the Internet
Fluency in one of the following: French, Mandarin, Cantonese, Spanish.
Valid Criminal Reference Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening completed (Criminal Reference Check needs to be updated every 3 years after employment as per Funder)
Current First Aid and CPR training (shall be kept valid)
Valid driver’s license, reliable vehicle and $1,000,000. personal liability insurance

Note: Medical Clearance and Functional Abilities Assessment are required for this position.
