About Matrix
Matrix Industrial Control Systems develops software solutions for food manufacturers across Canada and the United States. Our systems connect the plant floor with business systems to improve traceability, inventory visibility, production execution, labeling, shipping, and operational control.
We are modernizing a long-established industrial software platform into a modern, modular architecture using C#, Angular, SQL, APIs, cloud technologies, and AI-assisted development tools.
We are looking for a Junior Software Developer to join our development team and help us build, modernize, test, and support software used in real-world manufacturing environments.
The Role
This is a hands-on development position for someone early in their software development career who wants exposure to more than isolated coding tasks.
You will work on both new and existing applications, helping modernize our platform while developing features that interact with databases, APIs, ERP systems, barcode scanners, industrial hardware, and production processes.
You will work within established development standards and architectural patterns, with access to senior architectural guidance for technical direction, design decisions, code quality, and best practices.
Matrix also uses Windsurf and AI-assisted development tools as part of our development environment. We expect developers to become skilled at using AI to accelerate development, troubleshooting, testing, documentation, and code understanding while maintaining responsibility for the quality and correctness of the code they produce.
This is a strong opportunity for a developer who wants to learn how complete business and industrial systems are designed, built, deployed, and supported.
What You'll Do
- Develop and maintain applications using C#, .NET, Angular, TypeScript and SQL
- Build and enhance web-based applications and APIs
- Write and maintain SQL queries, stored procedures, and database integrations
- Assist with the modernization of existing applications into our current technology platform
- Develop features for production, inventory, receiving, labeling, shipping, and traceability applications
- Integrate Matrix applications with customer ERP and third-party systems
- Work with barcode scanners, printers, scales, and other plant-floor technologies
- Follow established application architecture, development patterns, and coding standards
- Participate in technical and code reviews and apply feedback from senior technical resources
- Write clear, maintainable, secure, and testable code
- Create unit and functional tests where appropriate
- Troubleshoot software issues and identify root causes
- Document development work and technical changes
- Participate in development planning, estimation, and task breakdown
- Support testing, deployment, and continuous improvement of existing applications
- Use Windsurf and other AI-assisted development tools to improve development speed, code understanding, testing, troubleshooting, and documentation
- Review, validate, and test AI-generated code rather than relying on generated output without understanding it
Technology You'll Work With
Our environment includes:
- C# / .NET
- Angular 16+
- TypeScript / JavaScript
- Microsoft SQL Server
- SQLite
- REST APIs
- Azure SQL
- Azure App Services
- Git / source control
- Visual Studio
- Windsurf and AI-assisted development tools
- ERP and third-party system integrations
- Barcode scanners, industrial PCs, printers, scales, and other plant-floor devices
Experience with all of these technologies is not required. We are looking for strong fundamentals, curiosity, and the ability to learn.
What We're Looking For
Required
- Diploma or degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Programming, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
- Understanding of object-oriented programming
- Experience with C#, WPF or a similar object-oriented language
- Basic understanding of relational databases and SQL
- Understanding of web application concepts
- Familiarity with Git or another source-control system
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
- Ability to read existing code and understand how different components interact
- Willingness to ask questions and learn established development patterns
- Ability to communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical team members
- Interest in using modern AI-assisted development tools while maintaining strong software engineering practices
Nice to Have
- Experience with C# and .NET
- Angular or another modern JavaScript framework
- Xamarin or experience with Android applications
- Microsoft SQL Server experience
- REST API development or integration experience
- Azure experience
- Windsurf or similar AI development tools
- Experience with manufacturing, warehouse, ERP, MES, or industrial software
- Experience integrating software with hardware or external systems
- Exposure to automated testing and CI/CD practices
What Success Looks Like
Within your first 6–12 months, we expect you to:
- Become productive within the Matrix development environment and architecture
- Consistently deliver well-tested development tasks
- Follow established coding, security, and architectural standards
- Understand the core workflows of our manufacturing software
- Become increasingly independent in troubleshooting and implementing defined features
- Contribute reusable solutions rather than unnecessary customer-specific code
- Participate constructively in code reviews and technical discussions
- Use AI-assisted development tools effectively without sacrificing code quality or understanding
- Demonstrate increasing ownership of features from development through testing and release
The Developer We're Looking For
You don't need to know everything when you join us.
We're looking for someone who is curious, disciplined, technically motivated, and willing to learn.
Our software operates in real production environments where inventory, labels, production transactions, and traceability matter. That means we value developers who think beyond simply making code work.
We want people who ask:
- Is this maintainable?
- Is there already a pattern for this?
- How should this be tested?
- What happens if something fails?
- Can this be reused?
- Do I understand the code I've created, including code generated with AI?
- Are we solving the underlying problem or just the immediate request?
If that sounds like the type of developer you want to become, we'd like to hear from you.
Why Join Matrix?
Matrix offers the opportunity to work on software that has a direct connection to real-world manufacturing. You'll gain exposure to the full software lifecycle—from databases and APIs through user interfaces, integrations, and plant-floor hardware—while working on the modernization of an established industrial software platform.
We are also actively incorporating AI-assisted software development into our engineering practices. You'll have the opportunity to learn how tools such as Windsurf can be used effectively alongside traditional software engineering practices to build better software faster.
As a smaller technology company, developers have the opportunity to see how their work affects customers and the overall product rather than working on one small piece of a very large system.
To apply, please submit your resume and, if available, links to GitHub projects, portfolio work, school projects, or other examples of software you have developed.
