The Opportunity:
BluMetric is looking for a dynamic full-time intermediate-Senior Geochemist to support and help lead a wide variety of mining and environmental projects. The ideal candidate will bring strong technical expertise in mine waste geochemistry, water quality assessment, acid rock drainage and metal leaching assessments, and geochemical modelling, along with the confidence to provide technical direction, mentor staff, and work directly with clients and regulators. The successful candidate will contribute to baseline and impact assessment projects, feasibility studies, hydrogeologic assessments, contaminant investigations, and closure or rehabilitation projects as part of integrated teams of hydrologists, hydrogeologists, engineers, environmental scientists, and geochemists.
Job Responsibilities:
-
Lead and review technical work for complex, multi-disciplinary mining projects, including geochemical characterization, water quality assessment, source term development, water and load balance inputs, and predictive water quality modelling.
- Plan, design, and oversee geochemical sampling programs involving rock, soil, tailings, waste rock, ore, groundwater, surface water, and other environmental media.
- Interpret geochemical, mineralogical, and water quality datasets to support acid rock drainage and metal leaching predictions, mine waste characterization, contaminant transport assessments, closure planning, and rehabilitation projects.
- Develop, calibrate, review, and communicate geochemical and water quality models using appropriate industry-standard tools and defensible assumptions.
- Prepare, review, and manage technical memoranda, reports, tables, figures, presentations, proposals, and regulatory submissions.
- Act as a technical advisor to project managers and clients by presenting clear interpretations, risks, recommendations, and practical mitigation or management options.
- Coordinate with laboratories, subcontractors, field teams, and internal technical specialists to confirm project objectives, schedules, budgets, quality requirements, and deliverables are met.
- Apply and oversee quality assurance and quality control procedures for field, laboratory, database, interpretation, and modelling work.
- Participate in and lead meetings with clients, regulators, Indigenous communities, project partners, and other interested parties, as appropriate.
- Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior and intermediate staff, supporting their technical development, field practices, report writing, and professional growth.
- Support project planning, scope development, budget tracking, proposal preparation, and client relationship management.
- Demonstrate safety leadership in office, laboratory, and field settings and promote BluMetric’s health and safety culture.
Key Qualifications, Education, and Skills:
-
A university degree in geochemistry, geology, earth sciences, environmental geoscience, geological engineering, environmental engineering, chemistry, or a related science or engineering discipline; a graduate degree is considered an asset.
- Minimum four (4) to ten (10) years of relevant experience in environmental geochemistry, preferably within environmental consulting and/or the mining sector.
- Professional designation in Ontario, Quebec, or another Canadian jurisdiction, or eligibility to obtain professional registration, is preferred.
- Strong technical knowledge of acid rock drainage and metal leaching assessments, mine waste geochemistry, mineralogy, water quality, and mine-affected water systems.
- Experience designing and implementing geochemical sampling programs and interpreting static and kinetic test results, mineralogical data, and water quality datasets.
- Experience with geochemical and water quality modelling using industry-standard software or codes such as PHREEQC, GoldSim, Geochemist’s Workbench, MIN3P, FeFlow-piChem, CE-QUAL-W2, or comparable tools.
- Demonstrated ability to prepare, review, and defend high-quality technical reports, regulatory submissions, and client-facing deliverables.
- Experience supporting environmental assessments, permitting, feasibility studies, closure planning, rehabilitation projects, and/or mine operations is considered an asset.
- Strong project coordination skills, including the ability to manage multiple assignments, meet deadlines, contribute to budgets and schedules, and support proposal development.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor junior and intermediate staff and collaborate effectively within multi-disciplinary teams.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex technical information clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Excellent safety record with the ability to demonstrate safety leadership in field and office environments.
