Job Description:
Marcon Metalfab is looking for an experienced Structural Engineer to join our Product Development & Innovation team.
This is not a traditional consulting role.
You will work at the intersection of structural engineering, research and development, physical testing, manufacturing, and commercialization. You will help develop proprietary structural products and systems—from early concepts and analytical models through prototype development, testing, qualification, and introduction to the market.
Our work includes innovative products for bridges, transportation infrastructure, structural systems, and seismic applications, including bridge bearings, expansion joints, seismic protection devices, and other engineered structural products.
If you are an engineer who enjoys solving difficult technical problems and wants to see your ideas move beyond calculations and drawings into real products that are manufactured, tested, and used in major infrastructure projects, this role offers that opportunity.
You will work closely with our Lead Engineer, Innovation Centre, as well as manufacturing, business development, and engineering teams. You will take ownership of defined development initiatives while contributing to the growth of Marcon's next generation of products.
What You Will Do
You will be involved throughout the product development process. Depending on the project, your responsibilities will include:
- Lead and manage assigned product development and engineering initiatives from concept through testing, qualification, and commercialization.
- Develop structural concepts, analytical models, calculations, and engineering designs for new structural products and systems.
- Perform structural and finite element analysis in accordance with applicable codes and standards, including CSA S6, CSA S16, and other relevant North American standards.
- Contribute to the development of bridge components, seismic protection systems, structural devices, bearings, expansion joints, and other engineered products.
- Plan and support laboratory, prototype, and field testing programs and use test results to improve and validate product performance.
- Work directly with manufacturing teams to develop practical, robust, and manufacturable solutions.
- Apply engineering judgment to balance structural performance, manufacturability, cost, reliability, and customer value.
- Develop design methodologies, technical documentation, calculation tools, and product specifications.
- Support product approvals, qualification programs, certifications, and market entry into new jurisdictions.
- Work with Business Development and customers to provide technical expertise, presentations, demonstrations, and engineering support.
- Research emerging technologies, materials, design practices, and market needs to identify opportunities for new products.
- Collaborate across engineering, manufacturing, quality, and business development to bring new products successfully to market.
What You Will Bring
You are a strong structural engineer who is interested in applying your technical knowledge beyond conventional project design.
You may come from bridge engineering, structural consulting, seismic engineering, industrial structures, heavy infrastructure, specialty engineered products, or a related field. Direct experience with all of Marcon's product areas is not expected.
We are particularly interested in candidates who bring strong engineering fundamentals, sound judgment, curiosity, and a desire to solve practical problems.
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
- Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with Engineers and Geoscientists BC, or eligible for registration in British Columbia.
- Approximately 5–10 years of relevant structural engineering experience.
- Strong understanding of structural analysis, design principles, and applicable engineering standards.
- Demonstrated ability to independently manage technical work and take ownership of engineering projects.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with engineers, manufacturing personnel, customers, and other technical stakeholders.
- Interest in research, development, testing, and the creation of new engineered products.
Strong Assets
The following experience would be valuable, but candidates are not expected to have all of it:
- Bridge or transportation infrastructure engineering.
- Seismic design or structural dynamics.
- CSA S6 and/or CSA S16 design.
- Structural analysis and finite element analysis.
- Design of specialized structural components or engineered products.
- Research and development, prototype development, or physical testing.
- Experience working with fabrication, manufacturing, or Design for Manufacturing principles.
- Experience with product qualification, certification, or approval processes.
- Customer-facing technical support or business development.
- Knowledge of North American structural and infrastructure markets.
Why Marcon?
At Marcon, engineering goes beyond design and calculations.
You will have the opportunity to work directly with the people who fabricate and build the products you develop. You will see concepts become prototypes, participate in testing, refine designs, and contribute to products that move into real-world applications.
This role offers the opportunity to:
- Work on technically challenging engineering problems.
- Develop proprietary products rather than working exclusively on project-specific designs.
- Combine structural engineering with experimentation, testing, manufacturing, and product development.
- Work across bridges, infrastructure, structural systems, and seismic applications.
- Take ownership of meaningful development projects.
- Build expertise in specialized structural products and emerging technologies.
- Contribute directly to the future direction of Marcon's product portfolio and technology development.
- Grow into increasing technical leadership and responsibility within the Innovation Centre.
About the Role
This is a full-time position based in Delta, British Columbia. Some travel within Canada and the United States may be required for testing, customer meetings, project support, and industry activities.
Salary range: $150,000–$165,000 per year, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
If you are a structural engineer who wants to move beyond conventional project work and help create the next generation of engineered structural products, we would like to hear from you.
Benefits:
- Extended health and dental coverage
- RRSP matching
- Paid vacation
- 5 paid sick days (post probation)
- Hybrid work arrangements
- Opportunities for education and training
- Relocation assistance
