Job Synopsis

Thrift Team Members are the driving force for the sorting and pricing of donated items from receiving to the retail floor. This full-time position will be focused on retail but will partner with the entire team to create an efficient, customer focused Thrift Shop.
Demonstrating a positive attitude, Thrift Team Members will provide active, hands-on support, direction, and training to volunteers, ensuring a safe work environment.

Thrift on Kent seeks to be a friendly, caring presence in the community, showing value and respect to all. Practicing and promoting faithful stewardship and care for God's creation and raising funds for MCC are also key components to the mission statement of this and other MCCO Thrift Shops.

MCC is a charitable organization that partners with churches and community organizations worldwide to walk with people who are disadvantaged. MCC supports activities that provide emergency assistance, reduce poverty, and promote healthy communities, sustainable living and alternatives to violence. As an internationally recognized NGO, MCC currently serves in more than 45 countries with over 475 partners, 1,000 staff and 40,000 volunteers.

Additional Details:

This role is based at the Thrift on Kent Thrift Shop in Kitchener Ontario. Hours of work will include day, evening and Saturday shifts.

Applicants must be legally able to work in Canada for the duration of their employment. Successful candidates will be required to provide a Police Background Check upon hire.

Required

Ability to create a positive, welcoming atmosphere within the shop, balancing patience, creativity, humour, and energy.
Strong interpersonal skills with people of all ages and backgrounds, displaying a sensitivity and awareness of cultural, racial, economic, and socially diverse communities.
Ability to relate well with a wide range of people and be comfortable in communication with volunteers, staff, the public, and volunteer groups of all ages.
Self-motivated. Able to take initiative and make quick and thoughtful decisions while working with a team of staff and volunteers.
Excel in a fast-paced environment, able to balance competing priorities and deadlines.
Excellent oral communication in English. Good written communication in English.
Commitment to the operating principles of MCC Thrift and the values of MCC including a heart for justice and active peacemaking.
Basic working knowledge of MS Office programs including Outlook and Word.
Able to work non-standard hours, including evenings and Saturdays.
Able to lift 50 lbs. and exert 11 to 25 lbs. of force frequently.
Able to spend 7.5 or more hours of intermittent standing or walking in a standard workday.
Able to repeatedly bend or stoop to floor level shelves and able to reach upper shelves with the use of a stool or a ladder when necessary.
Police vulnerable sector check (required upon hire)
Legally able to work in Canada

Preferred

Experience working with volunteers.
Experience in a retail and/or warehouse environment.
Awareness of second-hand market operations and trends.
Knowledge of antiques, collectibles, and brand recognition.

Key Responsibilities

General

Serve as a brand advocate and ambassador for MCC in every interaction with customers and donors.
Contribute to a customer centric culture in all interactions with customers, donors, volunteers, and colleagues.
Provide active, hands-on support to volunteers while creating a calm and fun atmosphere.
Have a task plan ready for volunteers each day to ensure that daily production goals and quotas are met.
Operate the Point-of-Sale terminals, troubleshooting or documenting issues when necessary.
Handle customer, donor and volunteer questions, concerns, and conflicts in a professional manner.
Provide back-up support for other staff in their absence, or as needed, including opening and closing of the shop (cash registers, daily reconciliations, etc.)

Health & Safety

Proactively support volunteers with reminders of proper lifting techniques, and the provision of tools to help with heavy lifting.
Adhere to Health & Safety Guidelines as established by law and the organization.
Be proactive in maintaining clean workspaces that meet health & safety standards, in the workroom and on the retail floor.

Participate in MCCO orientations, provincial meetings, Peace Conference and Staff Development Days.

Salary Details

Base salary: $47,489 - The salary stated is an annual amount. This role starts on day 1 with a company paid benefit package

Benefits

Group benefits package is employer-paid and includes supplemental medical/dental/vision, life insurance, AD&D, global medical assistance, EAP and RRSP contributions matched - starts on day one.

LTD premiums are the responsibility of all permanent, salaried positions. Premiums are the responsibility of the team member and are paid through salary deduction.
