We’re hiring: Transportation Manager/Director
Sturgeon Public School Division is seeking a collaborative and strategic leader to serve as Manager/ Director of Transportation Services. Reporting to the Associate Superintendent, Corporate Services, the Manager/Director is responsible for the leadership, planning, administration, and continuous improvement of the Division’s student transportation system.
The Manager/Director of Transportation Services ensures students are provided with safe, reliable, efficient, and equitable transportation services while maintaining compliance with applicable legislation, Division policies, and industry standards. The Manager/Director provides leadership for transportation operations, contractor relationships, budget management, route planning, risk management, and stakeholder engagement in support of student success.
Strategic Leadership and Operations
Provide leadership for the planning, implementation, and continuous improvement of student transportation services across the Division.
Develop and recommend transportation policies, procedures, and operational practices that align with Division priorities and legislative requirements.
Lead long-term transportation planning and operational reviews to maximize service effectiveness, efficiency, and safety.
Gather, analyze, and interpret transportation data to support evidence-informed decision-making.
Transportation Planning and Service Delivery
Design, implement, evaluate, and optimize transportation routes and schedules to support safe and efficient student transportation.
Coordinate transportation services for eligible students, including specialized transportation arrangements and parent-provided transportation agreements.
Collaborate with school administrators to address transportation needs and support effective service delivery.
Support emergency planning and operational responses related to transportation services.
Financial Management and Contract Administration
Develop, monitor, and administer the annual transportation budget in collaboration with the Associate Superintendent, Corporate Services.
Lead procurement processes, including requests for proposals and transportation service contracts.
Negotiate, administer, and monitor transportation contracts to ensure service quality, accountability, and value.
Prepare transportation grant submissions and other required operational and financial reports.
Safety, Compliance, and Risk Management
Ensure compliance with the Education Act, Traffic Safety Act, Student Transportation Regulation, Commercial Vehicle Safety Regulations, insurance requirements, and all applicable provincial and federal legislation.
Investigate transportation incidents and complaints and ensure appropriate follow-up and reporting.
Promote a culture of safety through proactive risk management, training, and continuous improvement practices.
Monitor contractor compliance with safety standards, contractual obligations, and Division expectations.
Leadership and Stakeholder Relations
Supervise, mentor, and support transportation staff while fostering a positive, collaborative, and service-oriented team culture.
Maintain productive relationships with transportation contractors, school administrators, families, municipalities, and community partners.
Provide professional guidance and recommendations to senior leadership regarding transportation operations, risks, and opportunities.
Respond to transportation concerns from parents, schools, and community stakeholders with professionalism and sound judgment.
Promote public confidence in student transportation services through effective communication and relationship-building.
Technology and Innovation
Oversee transportation routing software, operational systems, and reporting tools.
Identify opportunities to improve efficiency and service through technology and process enhancements.
Remain current with emerging transportation practices, legislation, and industry trends.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will possess:
Degree or diploma in Business Administration, Logistics, Transportation Management, Public Administration, Finance, or a related field; equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Progressive leadership experience in transportation, logistics, operations, public administration, or a related field.
Experience within student transportation and/or the public education sector is considered an asset.
Demonstrated knowledge of transportation legislation, regulations, safety requirements, and operational practices.
Experience managing budgets, contracts, procurement processes, and service providers.
Experience using transportation routing software and business technology systems.
