Role Description
This is a full-time on-site role for a Skilled Labourer specializing in underground site servicing and excavation, located in Ottawa, ON. The Skilled Labourer will be responsible for performing a wide range of manual and technical tasks essential to the installation of water and sewer infrastructure. Daily responsibilities include assisting pipe laying crews, performing specialized material handling (bedding and shoring), site preparation, and ensuring all underground work meets strict safety and quality standards. Additional duties involve operating specialized small equipment (cut-off saws, compactors), assisting in trench box assembly, and collaborating effectively with operators and lead pipe layers.
Qualifications
Experience: 3+ years of manual labor experience in civil construction, with a preference for underground site servicing (storm, sanitary, and watermain).
Technical Skills: Proficient in the use of gas-powered cut-off saws, jumping jacks, walk-behind compactors, and pneumatic equipment.
Heavy Equipment: Familiarity with excavation equipment; ability to signal and assist operators safely is required.
Physical Stamina: Must be able to perform physically demanding tasks in all weather conditions, including the ability to frequently lift and carry 60+ lbs.
Safety Knowledge: Strong familiarity with Ontario workplace safety practices, specifically regarding trench safety, shoring, and PPE protocols.
Documentation: Ability to read and interpret documentation. Reading Site plans/diagrams considered an asset. Accurately complete work reports via mobile devices.
Soft Skills: A self-disciplined team player with strong communication skills and a professional demeanor when interacting with the public.

Flagging and Work Zone Setup (Book 7 Compliance)
Licenses: Valid Ontario Class G Driver’s License with a clean abstract (reliable transportation to various job sites is mandatory) and ability to travel to various job sites.
Certifications: WHMIS, Worker Health & Safety Awareness (4-step), AODA, and Violence & Harassment in the Workplace are required. We will be able to provide this training if you do not have it up to date prior to starting work. Confined Space Entry and Working at Heights are considered strong assets.
