Sense Five Inc. is looking for a Shop Prep Technician / Finishing Assistant to join our cabinet and millwork finishing shop.
We specialize in high-quality cabinet refinishing, millwork finishing, and custom surface preparation. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys hands-on work, takes pride in small details, and understands that proper prep is one of the most important parts of a professional finish.
You will be working alongside our shop team to help prepare cabinet doors, drawers, panels, and millwork for finishing. This includes cleaning, sanding, masking, organizing parts, loading racks, and helping keep projects moving through the shop efficiently.
This is not just a general labour position. Prep quality directly affects the final result, so we are looking for someone who is consistent, careful, reliable, and willing to follow a process.
Responsibilities include:
- Cleaning and degreasing cabinet parts, doors, drawers, and millwork
- Sanding surfaces before primer, between coats, and before final finishing
- Labeling and organizing parts so projects stay accurate and efficient
- Masking, taping, and preparing parts for spray finishing
- Loading, unloading, and moving parts safely through the shop
- Assisting with small filling, repair, and touch-up prep once trained
- Keeping the shop clean, organized, and safe
- Following checklists, instructions, and quality standards
- Communicating clearly when something is unclear or needs attention
- Supporting the lead shop team member with daily production tasks
The ideal candidate:
- Has some experience in cabinetry, millwork, painting, refinishing, autobody, drywall finishing, construction, or another hands-on trade
- Understands that surface prep and attention to detail matter
- Is comfortable with repetitive work
- Can stay organized when handling multiple doors, drawers, or parts
- Is reliable, punctual, and willing to learn
- Takes direction well and asks questions instead of guessing
- Can work safely around tools, dust, coatings, and shop equipment
- Takes pride in clean, consistent work
Experience is an asset, but the right attitude is just as important.
We are willing to train the right person, but we need someone who is dependable, detail-oriented, and serious about doing quality work.
