Reporting to the EMS Manager, the PCP must demonstrate ability to:
- Deliver BLS level of care in a rapid, decisive and effective manner within challenging environmental and patient care conditions; including, but not limited to, long hours with minimal sleep, strenuous physical and emotional demands, both in and out of doors, any time of the day, during any season.
- Fulfill all aspects of their job description independent of direct supervision. Fulfill the physical and emotional requirements of this position; key aspects of which are strength, agility and emotional stability.
- Develop a high standard of interpersonal and communications skills. Foster cohesiveness, understanding and trust in a small team environment, independent of individual personalities.
- Maintain a high level of commitment to the provision of pre-hospital care, exemplified by meeting the requirements of a rotating work schedule and the needs of a highly inter-dependent team
Duties
- Ensures the ambulance, including equipment and supplies, are checked and ready for response at all times.
- Provides rescue, extrication and transport of patients while providing the highest possible level of pre hospital patient care.
- Participates in the public relations and public education seminars and activities.
- Participates in department education and skill development programs.
- Performs general cleaning and maintenance of the emergency service buildings.
- Maintain a portfolio of duties, as determined by the EMS Manager
- Daily vehicle operational checks including electrical, fluid and medical gas levels.
- Provides basic life support and assists ACP’s and support personnel in the provision of same.
- Provides BLS care as defined in the Health Disciplines Act and EMT Regulation, and extra skills as certification and Medical Direction permits.
- Completes all patient care reports and records as required prior to going off duty. Attends educational in-services. Coordinates and/or instructs in-service sessions as required.
- Trains and advises volunteers, students and observers in use of equipment and patient care
- Performs cleaning duties as required
Education, Skills, and Qualifications
- Graduate of a provincially approved Primary Care Paramedic (PCP) training program.
- Fire suppression, vehicle rescue and extrication, PALS and ACLS an asset.
- Demonstrated ability to combine a thorough knowledge of established practices and treatment protocols
- Demonstrated ability to adapt to adverse conditions, of all types, relating to the patient or to the environment. These changing conditions may at times include potentially violent, violent and/or life threatening situations.
- Demonstrated ability to react quickly and effectively to protect the safety of yourself, co-workers, the public and the patient
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Must be registered with the Alberta College of Paramedics as a PCP
- Must have and maintain a minimum class four driver’s license with fewer than six demerit points.
- Ability to obtain a clear criminal record check with vulnerable sectors and a clear family and child intervention check.
