REAL ESTATE LEGAL ASSISTANT / LAW CLERK
Meyrick, Weatherhead & Weatherhead LLP is seeking an experienced Real Estate Legal Assistant/Law Clerk to join our busy downtown Toronto practice.
This is not an entry-level position. Applicants must have direct experience independently handling Ontario residential real estate transactions from file opening through closing and lender reporting. Candidates without substantive Ontario real estate conveyancing experience will not be considered.
We are looking for a highly organized, detail-oriented professional who can manage residential real estate files independently from opening to closing, including all post-closing and reporting requirements. The successful candidate will be capable of working with minimal supervision and will serve as an important point of contact for our clients, lenders, realtors, and other legal professionals.
Key Responsibilities
- Open and organize new client files and maintain accurate electronic and physical file records.
- Independently manage residential purchase, sale, refinance, transfer, and mortgage transactions from start to finish.
- Prepare and review conveyancing documents, closing packages, statements of adjustments, and reporting documentation.
- Receive, review, and process mortgage instructions.
- Conduct title, writ, and execution searches.
- Coordinate with clients, lenders, realtors, mortgage brokers, and opposing counsel.
- Prepare requisition letters, undertakings, trust conditions, and closing documentation.
- Handle registration and closing through Teraview.
- Prepare reporting letters, final reports to lenders, and all post-closing documentation.
- Schedule client meetings and signing appointments.
- Maintain calendars, monitor deadlines, and ensure timely progression of files.
- Assist with general office administration, file management, and client communications.
- Provide professional, courteous, and responsive service that reflects the firm's commitment to client care.
Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of Ontario residential real estate law experience preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to independently manage real estate files from opening through closing and post-closing lender reporting.
- Proficiency with Teraview, Conveyancer, PCLaw, OnCorp, Microsoft Word, and WordPerfect.
- Strong understanding of Ontario conveyancing procedures and lender requirements.
- Exceptional organizational and file management skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to prioritize competing deadlines and work efficiently with minimal supervision.
- Estates experience is considered an asset.
Compensation
Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
