Reporting to the Inspector, Development and Standards, the
Sergeant Police Trainer provides operational leadership for ASPS training delivery, including recruit training, in-service training, field/police training programs, and specialized skills development. The role is responsible for supervising Field/Police Training Officers (FTOs/PTOs), coordinating training schedules and resources, and ensuring training delivery aligns with Provincial Policing Standards, ASPS operational requirements, and adult learning best practices. The Sergeant ensures training programs are delivered consistently, assessed rigorously, and defensibly, supporting member competency, operational readiness, and public safety.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and coordinate day‑to‑day training operations, including recruit, in‑service, field/police training, and specialized skills programs.
- Supervise and provide coaching, direction, and performance oversight to Field/Police Training Officers and training staff.
- Manage the Field/Police Training Officer program, including selection, evaluation of quality, consistency of standards, and accountability for training outcomes.
- Oversee recruit training delivery, scheduling, assessments, documentation, and progression decisions, including remediation or removal from training where required.
- Coordinate mandatory and specialized in‑service training, ensuring compliance with Provincial Policing Standards and recertification requirements.
- Monitor training quality, outcomes, and compliance, reporting issues, trends, and resource needs to the Inspector, Training, and supporting continuous improvement initiatives.
- Supervise and lead instructors within the Police training program who are Constables and Sheriffs that will be delivering training.
- Liaise with the Alberta Sheriffs Training Academy.
