Our client, a growing law firm in Calgary with a dedicated family law practice, is expanding its team and looking for a full-time Legal Assistant. The firm supports clients through some of the most important and sensitive moments in their lives, from separation and divorce to parenting and support arrangements. About the Role
This is a permanent, full-time, in-office position for an organized, detail-oriented professional who thrives in a fast-paced legal environment. As a Legal Assistant, you will work closely with the firm's lawyers across all aspects of family law matters, including separation agreements, divorce applications, parenting and support matters, and related court proceedings.
This is a busy, deadline-driven practice, and family law work can be emotionally demanding, as you will often support clients going through difficult moments in their lives. The right person stays calm, organized, and professional under pressure, takes pride in accurate, polished work, and enjoys being the dependable backbone of a busy legal team.
Responsibilities
- Prepare, format, revise, and proofread legal correspondence, pleadings, agreements, and court documents.
- Draft documents from lawyer instructions and precedents.
- Organize, maintain, and update electronic and physical client files.
- Communicate professionally with clients, opposing counsel, court staff, and third parties.
- Schedule meetings, court appearances, deadlines, and follow-up tasks.
- Enter lawyer time and assist with billing and file management.
- Prepare statements of account and assist with general trust and administrative matters as required.
- File documents with the Alberta Courts electronically or in person when necessary.
- Perform general administrative duties to support the legal team.
Qualifications
Required
- Previous experience as a legal assistant in a law firm setting.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel).
- Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Exceptional attention to detail and strong proofreading abilities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- A professional, courteous, and client-focused manner.
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a collaborative team.
- Sound judgment, discretion, and the ability to handle confidential information appropriately.
Preferred (Assets)
- Previous experience as a legal assistant in family, corporate, or real estate law in Alberta is an asset.
- Knowledge of Alberta family law procedures and court filing requirements is a plus.
- Experience with legal practice management software is an asset.
