This is an excellent opportunity for a first or second year university student enrolled in biological sciences, ecology, environmental science or studies.
The Greening Program Worker will assist with the delivery of services and programming to the community and help promote the Community Greening and Environment Program initiatives. They will help to increase local knowledge and skills relating to greening and environment issues and also help increase awareness about food security through various workshops, programs and educational resources.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Assist with the food distribution (Good Food Bag Program), yard maintenance (YardWorks Program), and garden maintenance (Community Garden Program)
· Help ensure the Community Garden Program, workshops and events run smoothly
· Assist in maintaining a wildlife-friendly, sustainable, permaculture garden with space for annual vegetable growing and a miniature forest garden
· Help with purchasing and pick-up of garden supplies, materials and produce
· Weed and ensure garden sites are clean and maintained
· Assist in repairs to garden plots as needed; ensure communal compost bins are maintained
· Assist with transportation of water and filling water containers at garden sites
· Assist with cleaning garden beds and sites at the end of the growing season
· Assist in other programming areas, community BBQ’s, Summer events and other organized community events; assist in other community activities such as festivals and the AGM
· Engage in community outreach work with other growing projects and community groups in the local area as appropriate
· Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS:
· High School diploma
· Empathy and experience with supporting and working with older, disabled people or historically marginalized populations, children, and families
· Positive attitude, enjoys taking initiative, works well independently and in a team
· Self-directed with exceptional organizational and follow-through skills
· Strong computer skills; proficient in Microsoft applications
· Strong interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to interact with staff and the general public
· Pro-Active leader with the ability to take initiative, work independently, problem solve, and work collaboratively with staff and others
· Ability to work some evenings and weekends
· Knowledge of the Daniel McIntyre / St. Matthews neighbourhoods is an asset
· Must have a valid Driver’s License and clean driver’s abstract with daily access to a vehicle.
· Current Criminal Record Check and Child Abuse Registry Check
· Legal authorization to work in Canada for the duration of the contract
