This is a temporary assignment with a big impact. Reporting to the Care Manager of the Acute Care Addictions Recovery Program (ACARP), the Addictions Counsellor III (AC) joins a dynamic, multidisciplinary team delivering recovery-focused care in a fast-paced acute care environment. This role is a great fit for someone who enjoys meaningful clinical work, collaboration, and the chance to grow their skills while supporting patients at a pivotal point in their recovery journey. The AC works alongside physicians, nurses, social workers, and allied health professionals to provide patient-centered, trauma-informed, and recovery-oriented care to individuals experiencing substance use concerns and related social or health complexities. The ACARP team is grounded in evidence-based practice and focuses on helping patients identify goals, build strengths, and improve overall wellbeing and stability. In this role, the AC completes comprehensive psychosocial and substance use assessments, delivers therapeutic interventions, and provides education that supports recovery planning and engagement in care. The AC supports patients through early recovery, motivation and readiness for change, and connection to ongoing and community-based support. The role also includes active participation in interdisciplinary care and discharge planning to promote safe transitions and continuity of care. The AC provides consultation and clinical support to staff across ACARP services and works with both inpatient units and the Emergency Department. This position will support ACARP Royal Alexandra Hospital and ACARP University of Alberta Hospital.
Description:
As an Addiction Counsellor III, you will provide quality, client focused, recovery based and culturally appropriate assessment, treatment, case management, crisis intervention, education and referral services for clients and their families; as well as community stabilization services. You will develop and implement treatment plans and provide a range of interventions which offer least intrusive and most appropriate services to clients and their families. You will also monitor and evaluate client progress and achievement of recovery goals and adapt treatment as needed. As an Addiction Counsellor III, you will depend on your excellent relationship building skills with clients, families, government staff and colleagues.

Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Addictions or a combination of a bachelor's degree in a related field with course work in addictions. A related degree combined with a diploma related to addictions, or an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Individuals eligible for registration under the Health Professions Act (Alberta) must maintain active registration. Individuals may require authorization/permission under regulation to perform restricted psychosocial interventions and/or restricted activities.
Additional Required Qualifications:
Experience working with inner city/vulnerable populations. Demonstrated experience of working within a harm reduction framework. Demonstrated proficiency in the assessment of patients with substance use disorder. Knowledge of screening tools used for assessments of substance use and treatments. Demonstrated ability to support patient’s transition to community resources to ensure continuity of care. Strong communication skills. Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team.
