General Manager – Downtown Training Studio
The Barbell Base is looking for a General Manager to lead our Downtown training studio.
This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who loves coaching, building community, developing people, and creating an exceptional member experience. The General Manager is responsible for the overall performance, operations, team culture, and service standards of the studio.
This is not a desk-only management role. The General Manager is expected to be active on the floor, coaching members, leading the team, driving sales, and making sure the studio runs at a high standard every day.
Key ResponsibilitiesMember Experience & Retention
The General Manager is responsible for the full member journey, from the first consultation through to long-term retention and results.
Responsibilities include:
- Meeting prospective members for consultations and leading the sales process
- Understanding each member’s goals, needs, training history, and barriers
- Helping members get started successfully and feel confident in the studio
- Supporting members with regular check-ins, accountability, and goal setting
- Building strong professional relationships with members
- Creating a welcoming, high-standard, community-driven studio environment
- Identifying members who may be struggling, disengaged, or at risk of cancelling
- Helping members stay consistent, make progress, and feel supported
Sales & Studio Growth
The General Manager personally owns the sales process at the studio and is expected to help grow the location.
Responsibilities include:
- Following up with leads and prospective members
- Booking and completing consultations
- Presenting membership options clearly and confidently
- Helping prospective members choose the right training option
- Maintaining accurate notes and documentation in the studio systems
- Contributing to local marketing, referral, and community-building initiatives
- Taking ownership of studio revenue growth and overall business performance
Coaching & Service Standards
The General Manager will coach an average of 15–20 hours per week and is expected to lead by example on the training floor.
Responsibilities include:
- Delivering high-quality personal training and small group coaching sessions
- Maintaining a safe, professional, and motivating training environment
- Ensuring members receive excellent coaching, attention, and support
- Upholding the programming and service standards of The Barbell Base
- Providing feedback and support to coaches to improve session quality
- Ensuring the member experience is consistent across all coaches and sessions
Team Leadership
The General Manager is responsible for leading, supervising, and developing the coaching team.
Responsibilities include:
- Hiring, onboarding, training, and developing coaches
- Supervising coach performance and professionalism
- Providing regular feedback, coaching, and accountability to staff
- Building a positive, high-performance team culture
- Managing schedules and ensuring the studio is properly staffed
- Addressing performance issues directly and professionally
- Making staffing decisions in the best interest of the business and members
Studio Operations
The General Manager is responsible for making sure the studio runs smoothly day to day.
Responsibilities include:
- Managing daily studio operations
- Maintaining cleanliness, organization, and presentation standards
- Ensuring equipment, supplies, and systems are properly maintained
- Managing administrative tasks accurately and on time
- Using studio software and systems to track members, leads, attendance, and follow-ups
- Supporting events, challenges, workshops, and community initiatives
- Solving problems quickly and taking ownership when issues arise

Qualifications
- Personal Training certification required
- Minimum 12 months of personal training or fitness industry experience
- Experience leading or developing a team is strongly preferred
- Sales experience is an asset
- Related education in kinesiology, exercise science, business, or a similar field is an asset
- Strong knowledge of strength training and coaching fundamentals
- Excellent communication and leadership skills
- Ability to build and maintain professional relationships with members and staff
Working Conditions
- Full-time role
- Base salary plus performance-based bonus
- Average of 15–20 coaching hours per week
- Evening, weekend, and split-shift availability may be required
- Flexibility is required for events, staff coverage, member needs, and studio operations
- The General Manager may be required to perform duties outside of this job description as needed to support the studio
