Terminal Forest Products Ltd. (TFP) is a medium-sized, privately owned forest products company with operations on the southwest coast of British Columbia and northwest Washington State. The company owns and operates two sawmills, a remanufacturing plant, as well as a dryland log sorting operation. TFP specializes in manufacturing a wide variety of finished Western Red Cedar lumber products destined for domestic and international markets, and also offers log custom cutting and log custom sorting services at company-owned facilities.
Job Summary
Terminal Forest Products is looking for an experienced Pony Edger Operator to join our sawmill team. The successful candidate will be responsible for setting up, adjusting, controlling, and monitoring the Pony Edger/Resaw machine center to ensure lumber is cut to the correct size, grade, quality, and value as directed by the supervisor. The Pony/Resaw machine center is a recovery machine designed to upgrade lumber.
Duties Include:
- Set up, adjust, control, and monitor the Pony Edger machine center.
- Monitor lumber flow from the supply decks.
- Ensure lumber is properly positioned and the machine is set up for optimum recovery.
- Perform visual and operational checks of machinery and moving components before starting the shift.
- Ensure decks, infeed/outfeed rolls, belt conveyors, catwalks, and work areas are clear of debris, jam-ups, and blockages.
- Communicate with supervisors and maintenance regarding machine issues, safety concerns, downtime, and lumber quality concerns.
- Track downtime and record the reason and length of machine delays.
- Follow all lockout procedures and safe work practices.
- Perform cleanup duties during downtime.
- Perform other duties as assigned by management.
Position Requirements Include:
- Previous experience operating a Pony Edger, Resaw, Edger, or similar sawmill machine centre is required.
- Strong understanding of sawmill operations, lumber flow, and lumber recovery.
- Ability to safely set up, adjust, and monitor machine operation.
- Ability to identify lumber quality issues, machine deficiencies, jam-ups, and safety concerns.
- Must be able to follow lockout procedures and all company safety rules.
- Must wear required PPE, including hard hat, safety glasses, CSA-approved safety footwear, suitable gloves, hearing protection, and hi-visibility vest.
- Ability to work morning, afternoon, and occasional weekend shifts.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment.
