What to Expect
The Optimus geartrain manufacturing team is seeking a skilled and highly motivated, mechanical equipment design engineer with high precision equipment build experience within gearbox, electric motor or other industries focusing on rotating machinery design and manufacturing. We work with the cross-functional teams (Design, Quality, Production, Sustaining, Automation, and Supply Chain) throughout the entire lifecycle of a product (from initial design through prototype development and into full production) to develop volume manufacturable designs and processes that will produce gearboxes. The role of the equipment design engineer is to support establishing a world-class production line for gearboxes and drive scalable design and production methods used to make “the machines that make the machines”.
The ideal candidate takes pride in their work, has excellent engineering and physics fundamentals with hands on experience, is excited about manufacturing equipment and process development, does not shy away from a challenge, highly organized, has great attention to detail, and is able to work in fast paced development environment with analytical and practical engineering focus.
What You'll Do
Own design of equipment builds through their entire lifecycle, from initial concept generation through assembly and production bring-up
Prepare overall machine design concepts for custom designed, special purpose manufacturing equipment and systems
Detailed machine design including drawings of custom automated tooling, fixtures, mechanisms, robotic end of arm tooling etc.
Detailed engineering analysis of custom mechanical components including hand calculations and finite element analysis
Selection and integration of commercial components, sensors, motors, pneumatic, hydraulic actuators, etc.
Conduct design reviews for internal team feedback and for cross-functional presentations. Be a liaison between actuator, gearbox, design and manufacturing engineering departments
Lead all technical conversations with sub-system or supporting equipment suppliers
Create detailed drawings and coordinate with internal and external machine shops to fabricate custom machined parts, weldments, extrusions and sheet metal components
Work with technician teams to assemble and commission new equipment
Validate equipment performance and reliability. Create comprehensive equipment handover packages and system documentation
What You'll Bring
5 or more years of experience as a Mechanical Engineer
Experience with SolidWorks CAD and PDM software. Familiarity with other CAD software (i.e. CATIA, Siemens NX) also applies
Experience with automation equipment design and custom machine building. Familiarity with instrumentation used during high precision equipment build. (i.e. laser alignment devices)
Experience with various manufacturing processes (i.e., assembly, fastening, dispensing, laser welding)
Strong understanding of drafting standards and the application of GD&T (e.g., ASME Y14.5)
Familiarity with design and troubleshooting of rotating machinery. i.e. systems with bearings
Familiarity with specifying systems based on torque & power curves of electric motors or systems integrated with gearboxes
Experience using finite element software for structural analysis
Experience with experimental modal analysis for analyzing the stiffness of machine structures
Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related field, or equivalent experience
