In accordance with the established mission, vision, values, and strategic priorities of Northern Health, and under the general supervision of Manager or designate, the Palliative Care Nurse Consultant practices in accordance with the standards of practice and code of ethics as outlined by the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM), as well as within a patient and family centered care model. The Palliative Care Nurse Consultant is a member of the Northern Health Palliative Care Consultation Team. The Palliative Care Consultation team functions in an advisory capacity to support and mentor primary care givers in every care setting where patients and their families receive palliative care. In collaboration with long-term care, acute and community teams, the Palliative Care Nurse Consultant is responsible for planning, organizing, coordinating, teaching, and evaluating palliative and end of life care services provided to clients and patients and their caregivers/families.
Must attach resume and cover letter which clearly outline experience in:
1. education/teaching,
2. project management/quality improvement,
3. palliative care pain and symptom management, and any palliative care certifications and extra education
Shift Rotation/Hours of work: Monday to Friday, Days - 08:30 to 16:30
A first in Canada: minimum Nurse-to-Patient Ratios (mNPRs) are starting in B.C.! Northern Health, alongside B.C.'s other health authorities, is implementing mNPRs as a transformative staffing initiative that aims to improve the working environment of nurses in order to provide better quality care to our patients.
- Graduation from an approved School of Nursing. Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Colombia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM)
- Certificate in Hospice Palliative Care Nursing (C) OR recognized post-basic education in palliative care.
- Three (3) years’ recent, related nursing experience in palliative care or related specialty, including two (2) years’ related teaching experience to a variety of health care providers and/or group facilitation or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Valid BC Driver’s license. Use of personal vehicle may be required.
Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of current palliative care philosophy, principles, practices and resources.
- Ability to assess learning needs of designated staff and teach skills required.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to manage change effectively, demonstrating knowledge and skill in coalition building.
- Ability to deal with others effectively.
- Ability to work as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
- Ability to apply decision making and analytical skills.
- Ability to role model conflict resolution strategies.
- Ability to prioritize and organize work.
- Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
- Ability to operate related equipment.
