Job Summary
The University of British Columbia’s (UBC) Faculty of Forestry and Environmental Stewardship (Faculty) is recognized globally as one of the leading forestry faculties in the world. Today the Faculty embodies a comprehensive offering of undergraduate and graduate programs that cover a breadth of disciplines including wood products science, natural resources conservation, forest sciences, urban forestry and forest resources management.
The successful candidate will act as the lead Faculty of Forestry and Environmental Stewardship digital and web designer. They will oversee the development, design, and management of the Faculty’s main websites and key landing pages. In addition, they will be responsible for developing digital assets such as digital ads, digital signage, social media graphics, web story graphics, info graphics, program brochures and banners. The incumbent will work collaboratively to ensure that all web and graphic design projects align with key stakeholders’ expectations.
Organizational Status
While this position reports directly to the Director, Marketing and Communications they act as a lead with staff and faculty in order to realize the requirements and key deliverables of strategic web-based and graphic design initiatives.
Work Performed

Manages and leads all aspects of the Faculty’s digital graphic design and digital ad campaigns for clients within the Faculty.

Plans and develops design projects including the creation of original vector illustrations, manipulation of digital images and design/layouts.

Leads in the design of creative marketing campaign assets including but not limited to: digital ads, digital signage, banners, social media posts, infographics, newsletters and brochures.

Manages relationships with external service providers, such as creative and digital agencies.

Presents and defends designs and key deliverables to peers and senior management.

Ensures web and digital design aligns with established branding standards.

Creates wireframes, storyboards, user flows, process flows and site maps to communicate interaction and web design ideas.

Leads web design strategies and project planning overseeing the development and content maintenance of all external and internal websites at the Faculty.

Heads all testing and improvements to the design and functionality of the Faculty’s websites, ensuring website function across devices i.e. desktop, mobile, tablet.

Finds solutions to increase free traffic to the site through the optimization of website pages.

Drives SEO and keyword best practices in content creation and content programming.

Directs changes to Faculty website structure, content, linking and other factors to improve SEO positions for target keywords.

Creates compelling user experience approaches, user interface solutions, interaction behaviours and design systems by establishing a vision through efficient design and user-flows.

Optimizes sites for maximum speed and scalability.

Establishes, promotes and educates colleagues on digital design guidelines, best practices and standards to ensure a thorough understanding of brand consistency across all digital platforms and assets.

Leads the development of manuals and templates to keep team documentation current and accurate.

Makes recommendations on the purchase of tools to aid in the improvement of the design and/or performance of Faculty websites.

Responsible for website performance reports and recommendations for optimization.

Performs other related duties as required.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
May need to balance multiple projects with competing deadlines and make decisions on how best to manage the work given, based on the timeframe, the relative strategic importance of the projects and the impact of failing to meet deadlines. The quality of the digital assets developed and managed has a profound influence on the public's opinion of the Faculty of Forestry and Environmental Stewardship. The production and distribution of inaccurate, inconsistent or ineffective information could have a significant detrimental effect on the Faculty’s ability to compete for research funding, reputation with alumni, to attract and steward donors and the Faculty’s ability to attract the best graduate and undergraduate students possible.
Supervision Received
Works under the broad direction of the Director, Marketing and Communications and they will collaborate with other members of the team including the Graphic Design, Publications and Illustrations Coordinator. Receives minimal direction on objectives and must be able to lead projects and develop procedures for completion to meet critical deadlines.

The position may be required to supervise Work Learn or Co-op students working in this area.
Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum five years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
Five years experience in a relevant discipline, preferably in a large complex organization or equivalent combination of experience and education. Have the ability to work effectively and collaboratively within a dynamic team environment.
Skills

Expert working knowledge of graphic design software including Adobe CC suite: Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator or other visual design and wire-framing tools, ideally for large complex organizations.

Demonstratable graphic design skills with a strong portfolio.

Expert working knowledge of WordPress.

Strong proficiency in HTML, CSS and JavaScript.

Experience in assessing, configuring, and maintaining open-source CMS plugins/modules is a definite asset.

Experience working with web analytics, SEO, UX and UI research tools and platforms.

Proven work experience as a web designer developing new and maintaining existing websites.

Experience with Google Analytics and Google Ads.

Knowledge of web accessibility and web standards (WCAG, W3C).

Familiar with BC FIPPA and cybersecurity best practices.

Experience working in an Agile development process is an asset.

Excellent service-oriented communication skills, both verbal and written, with an ability to impart technical information to audiences with mixed levels of ability.

Demonstrated organizational skills in project and time management, with an ability to work under pressure to meet multiple deadlines.

Demonstrated willingness to learn and continually upgrade skills.

Knowledge of the University and internal working groups would be a definite asset.
