ROLE SUMMARY
The Respiratory Therapist (RT) is responsible for delivering specialized respiratory care to medically complex clients, including the management of mechanical ventilation and advanced airway support. RT conducts comprehensive respiratory assessments, initiates and adjusts ventilator settings in accordance with established ventilation protocols, and supports airway management, including intubation and extubation procedures.
The RT continuously monitors and evaluates clients requiring respiratory support, identifies changes in clinical status, and recommends or implements appropriate interventions to optimize respiratory function and ensure client safety. The role involves close collaboration with physicians, nursing staff, and the interdisciplinary team to deliver coordinated, evidence-based respiratory care.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Provides respiratory care including care and management of clients using mechanical ventilation, assessment and modification of mechanical ventilation in accordance with ventilation/weaning guidelines, airway management, and intubation and extubation.
· Continually evaluates the status of clients requiring respiratory care, and suggests interventions to maximize such care
· Utilizes the teaching/learning process to provide education, both formal and informal, to clients/families, colleagues, students, and other professionals within the organization and externally
· Collaborates effectively with the interdisciplinary team
· Demonstrates therapeutic relationships with clients and family
· Adheres to core principles of Client- and Family-Centered Care, which is demonstrated through collaboration and information sharing; cooperation and participation; and respect with families, service agencies and the community at large
· Identifies and resolves equipment problems or potential equipment problems and evaluates and tests new equipment
· Identifies and implements mechanisms of professional growth through continuing education
· Practices according to organizational policies and standards for practice as set out by the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario
· Documents in clients’ health records as required, following Safehaven and regulatory college policies
· Participates in quality improvement initiatives, supports the maintenance of a safe and healthy work environment and advances a culture of client safety through work and daily practices
· Performs other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Graduation from an accredited Respiratory Therapy program
- Current registration in good standing with the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario
- Membership in C.S.R.T. and/or R.T.S.O. is preferred
- Current BCLS certificate—Basic Rescuer
- Experience in critical care, respiratory rehab, complex continuing care, and/or home care
- Experience in chronic respiratory care/rehabilitation an asset
- Experience with children with Medical complexity preferred[KH1]
- Demonstrated functional written and verbal language skills to communicate effectively with clients, families and members of the interprofessional care team required
- Demonstrated ability to deal with a changing environment and client population
- Proven ability to independently take initiative and the ability to function effectively as a contributing member of an interdisciplinary team
