About the Role
STARS is hiring Empowerment Coaches to support job seekers, employees, and community members with autism and/or intellectual disabilities.
What You’ll Do
- Provide individualized, strengths-based coaching in workplace and community settings
- Support individuals in building skills for employment, independence, and everyday life
- Provide strategies and practical supports for communication, self-advocacy, and problem-solving
- Support navigation of workplace expectations, routines, and challenges
- Support participation in community activities, social connections, and skill-building (may include transporting individuals)
- Collaborate with employers when appropriate and with consent
- Encourage confidence, independence, and decision-making
- Model strategies and gradually fade supports as independence increases
- Adapt supports to individual goals, needs, and communication/learning styles
- Maintain professional boundaries
- Complete documentation (session notes, progress updates, reports, create visuals as needed)
- Participate in training, supervision, and team communication
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times
Note: This role focuses on coaching, skill development, and building long-term independence. Empowerment Coaches do not complete tasks for individuals and do not provide personal care.
What We’re Looking For
- Experience supporting Autistic individuals and/or individuals with Intellectual Disabilities
- Experience with skill-building, coaching or support, constructive feedback, and problem-solving
- Ability to support individuals in building independence without taking over tasks
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and strong time management
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills (with individuals, families, and employers when appropriate)
- Reliable, compassionate, and adaptable, with a calm and respectful approach
- Ability to maintain clear professional boundaries
- Comfortable working in a variety of settings (community, workplace, occasional virtually)
- Open to feedback, learning, and ongoing professional development
Requirements:
- Availability across a minimum of 3 days per week
- Criminal record check & vulnerable sector check (required upon hiring)
- References required
- Either:
- Post-secondary education in a human services, social services, or related field
- OR high school diploma/GED with relevant experience in the field
Assets:
- Valid driver’s license
- Access to a reliable vehicle
- Applicable auto insurance for transporting clients where applicable
- First Aid certification
Position Details
- Part-time (minimum 3-hour shifts)
- Flexible schedule:
- Daytime (employment supports)
- Afternoons/evenings/weekends (community supports)
- Locations: workplaces, community settings, occasional virtual support
Compensation
- $18/hour to start, with increases at 6 months and beyond
- Mileage reimbursement (when transporting clients)
- 4% vacation pay
- Paid training and ongoing support
