The Ministry of the Attorney General, Criminal Law Division, offers a challenging opportunity for an experienced lawyer to act as an Assistant Crown Attorney under the Sexual Violence and Harassment Action Plan (SVHAP) Initiative. In this position, you will take a senior, specialized role in sexual assault prosecutions and participate
in the Sexual Violence Advisory Group (SVAG). The incumbent will be working in the Regional Office and will report to the Director of Crown Operations, North Region.

ELIGIBILITY FOR THIS COMPETITION IS RESTRICTED TO STEP 1 CANDIDATES INCLUDING OPS ALOC AND OCAA LAWYERS living or working within 125 km of this location. Note: Eligible lawyers from outside the Area of Search may apply but will not be entitled to relocation or travel expenses for the transfer as set out below.
Step 1: All regular/fixed-term OCAA and ALOC lawyers on staff, current Redeployment List Members and current Articling Student Hireback Pool Members.
Step 2: In the absence of qualified applicants at Step 1 the competition may be reposted so that external applicants or non-members of the above-mentioned groups would then be eligible to apply.
Duties Will Include:
- Providing legal and strategic analysis and advice, information and related services (i.e. research, opinions, Attorney General Consents, Dangerous Offender Applications, Freedom Of Information requests, etc.) on matters affecting the region
- Ensuring effective case Management and Jordan timeline strategies are carried out in the region
- Preparing correspondence/briefing notes on behalf of the Regional Director/Deputy Director, Assistant Deputy Minister and Deputy Minister and Attorney General
- Responding to requests from the public
- Establishing and maintaining professional relationships with all members of the organization and other participants in the justice system to support regional, divisional and ministry goals and to support the administration of justice
- Prosecuting offences pursuant to the Criminal Code of Canada (CCC) and other statutes at all levels of Court, and specifically Ontario Court of Justice and Superior Court of Justice, with or without a jury
- Performing case management duties to support the efficient prosecution of criminal matters, e.g. screening, disclosure, resolution meetings
- Providing legal support and advice to the Office of the Director of Crown Operations and various local Crown Offices in the North Region
- Ensuring timely and comprehensive responses are made to all substantive, procedural and policy requirements in the criminal litigation process
- Performing special justice-related projects and involvement in community programs as requested
- Keeping informed on office/regional/divisional/provincial initiatives, protocols and directives and implementing them to ensure consistent practices within the justice system, e.g. Bail Best Practices Protocol, Justice Modernization, Case Management Protocol, Domestic Violence Court Initiatives
- Travelling frequently to other court locations to prosecute and support the prosecution teams across the North Region (Dryden, Fort Frances, Gore Bay, Haileybury, Kapuskasing, Kenora, North Bay, Parry Sound, Sault Ste. Marie, Sudbury, Thunder Bay, Timmins)
- Assisting other counsels with prosecutions, research, etc.
- You have membership in good standing as a lawyer with the Law Society of Ontario
- Valid Ontario Class 'G' Driver's license
You have proven knowledge and expertise in:
- Participating in the Sexual Violence Advisory Group (SVAG) to improve ways that sexual assault complainants are dealt with in the criminal justice system
- Providing mentoring and training to prosecutors and other justice participants on the conduct of sexual assault prosecutions
- Conducting sexual assault preliminary hearings/trials in the Ontario Court of Justice and Superior Court of Justice as required
- Providing professional advice to police, related agencies, and the general public on sexual assault matters
- Assisting other counsel with prosecutions, research, etc.
- Conducting prosecutions, hearings, applications, motions, appeals and/or reviews on a regular basis on behalf of the Attorney General, in the Ontario Court of Justice [Criminal, Youth Court, Provincial Offences Court, Bail Court, including Weekend and Statutory Holiday (WASH) Court] and the Superior Court of Justice
- Providing education and training to stakeholders and partners as assigned
- Keeping informed on office/regional/divisional/provincial initiatives, protocols and directives and implementing them to ensure consistent practices within the justice system, e.g. Justice Centres, Bail Best Practices Protocol, Criminal Modernization Committee, Case Management Protocol, Indigenous People's Court, Domestic Violence Court Initiatives and the Direct Accountability Program
- Maintaining working knowledge of divisional initiatives and programs and participating on such projects as required
Ensuring timely and comprehensive responses are made to all substantive, procedural and policy requirements in the criminal litigation process
- Performing case management duties to support the efficient prosecution of criminal matters
- Developing and maintaining technical skills required to perform duties as assigned
- Ability and willingness to travel to various locations within the North Region and or province to provide training and/or prosecute cases which include but not limited to Dryden, Fort Frances, Gore Bay, Haileybury, Kapuskasing, Kenora, North Bay, Parry Sound, Sault Ste. Marie, Sudbury, Thunder Bay, Timmins
