Job Description
General Statement of Duties:
The Journeyman Mechanic is responsible for maintaining, repairing and troubleshooting mechanical systems and equipment used on a drilling rig. This position requires specific expertise and knowledge of drilling rig operations, equipment and a commitment to safety and adherence to industry standards.
Supervision Received:
Then Journeyman Mechanic reports to and receives supervision from the Engine Manager.
Supervision Exercised:
The Journeyman Mechanic is responsible for supporting and training junior or apprentice mechanics.
Summary of Duties (Duties may include, but are not limited to the following):
Equipment Maintenance & Repair

Perform preventive maintenance, inspection, and repairs on rig equipment, including engines, pumps, compressors, hydraulic systems, and generators.

Troubleshoot, repair and conduct regular preventative maintenance and inspections of top drive equipment.

Disassemble, repair, and reassemble rig machinery to ensure efficient operation and compliance with company and industry standards.

Regularly perform preventative maintenance tasks and inspections ensuring optimal performance.

Manage and maintain service truck, ensuring it is adequately stocked with tools and spare parts.

Assist with the start up and commissioning of new drilling rigs.
Troubleshooting & Diagnostics:

Quickly identify, diagnose, and resolve mechanical issues on drilling rig equipment to minimize downtime.

Use diagnostic tools and techniques to assess machinery, interpret performance issues, and plan effective solutions.

Perform root cause analysis on mechanical failures and implement corrective actions to prevent future issues.

Repair and rebuild mechanical component due to failure.
Safety & Compliance:

Adhere to all safety regulations, including performing hazard assessments, and use of personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements.

Ensure all work is compliant with OH&S legislation and company health, safety and environment policies and procedures to maintain a safe work environment.

Actively participate in safety meetings and report any hazards or incidents.
Documentation & Reporting:

Maintain detailed records of all maintenance activities, repairs, and inspections performed on rig equipment.

Provide reports to rig supervisors and management on equipment condition, maintenance needs, and any completed work.

Read and interpret mechanical blueprints, technical diagrams, and schematics specific to drilling rigs.
Collaboration & Communication:

Work closely with other rig personnel, including electricians, operators, and engineers, to coordinate maintenance schedules and minimize operational interruptions.

Communicate effectively with team members and supervisors, ensuring that everyone is informed of equipment status and any required repairs or adjustments.

Flexibility to work in diverse conditions and handle unexpected challenges on the rig.
Education and Experience:
-
Licensed certified Journeyman as a Mechanic, heavy-duty mechanic or Millwright and a minimum of 3-5 years oilfield related experience.

Experience with AC electric drilling rigs, PLC controls and hydraulics is an asset

Strong understanding of diesel engines (Cummins, Detroit Diesel and CAT engines), hydraulic systems, pneumatics, and rig-specific machinery. Proficient in the use of hand tools, diagnostic equipment, and specialized rig machinery.
This position often requires travel to remote work locations for extended periods of time and may require work at heights and in confined spaces. Must be capable of lifting and carrying heavy equipment as needed. Must have a valid driver’s license, Standard First Aid certification and H2S tickets.
