The Ka:’yu:’k’t’h’/Che’tles7et’h’ First Nations (KCFN) are a modern Treaty Nation located on the west coast of Vancouver Island. About one-third of KCFN members live in the Houpsitas community (Kyuquot, BC), with additional offices in Campbell River. The Lands & Natural Resources Department manages 6,300 hectares of Treaty Lands and oversees KCFN's rights across 149,000 hectares of territory, including 13 river systems and 846 km of shoreline.
The Lands & Resources Technician (LRT) supports the protection and responsible stewardship of KCFN lands, waters, and natural resources (Hahuulth). Reporting to the Stewardship Manager, this position conducts field monitoring, scientific data collection, fishery and environmental monitoring, food safety sampling, and compliance activities while helping ensure land and resource use aligns with KCFN laws, values, and stewardship objectives. The LRT works closely with community members, resource users, government agencies, and project partners to promote responsible resource management and environmental protection throughout KCFN territory.
Duties/Tasks/Responsibilities:
- Conduct field patrols, environmental monitoring, and stewardship activities throughout KCFN territory
- Participate in scientific monitoring, fishery monitoring, environmental sampling, and field-based stewardship projects
- Monitor land and resource use activities, including forestry operations, and document potential environmental or cultural impacts
- Assist with cultural heritage monitoring and food safety sampling initiatives
- Maintain accurate field notes, reports, monitoring records, and environmental data
- Support compliance by providing information and guidance to community members, visitors, contractors, and resource users
- Build positive working relationships with KCFN members, government agencies, and project partners while representing the Stewardship Program
- Follow safe work practices, maintain confidentiality, and perform other related duties as assigned
Requirements:
- Certificate or diploma in Natural Resource Management, Biology, Forestry, Geography, or a related field with one (1) year of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and at least three (3) years of relevant experience
- Experience conducting fieldwork, environmental monitoring, natural resource management, or related activities
- Strong observational, documentation, communication, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in remote outdoor environments
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 and Google Workspace
- Valid Class 5 Driver's License
- Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP), MED A3, and ROC-M certifications, or willingness to obtain
- WHMIS and Violence & Harassment Prevention training, or willingness to obtain
- Satisfactory Police Information Check and standard employment background checks
- Willingness to travel, including overnight travel, and work evenings, weekends, and statutory holidays as required
- Knowledge of Nuu-chah-nulth culture and experience operating boats or working within coastal environments are considered assets
