The Calgary office is seeking a Specialist or Coordinator, Client & Business Development, to support lawyers and internal teams in growing client relationships, developing business opportunities, and executing marketing and client-facing initiatives. The role combines strategy, research, events, sponsorships, directories, RFP support, and business planning in a collaborative, fast-paced professional services environment.
Success in this role requires a strong understanding of departmental and firm-wide priorities to ensure all efforts align with and advance the firm’s strategic objectives.
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
Major Responsibilities
- Provide collaborative solutions to support client and business development initiatives, prioritize objectives, absorb new ideas and concepts quickly, and deliver high-quality work product with thoughtful approach to communicating clearly with the target audience.
- Coordinate with the local and national team to evaluate and organize sponsorship activations with industry associations, conferences, and community organizations.
- Maintain practice group deal lists and draft matter descriptions for internal and external use.
- Collaborate with the Pursuits team on RFPs and credentials, providing Calgary-specific context and contributing to representative work, lawyer biographies, and other content, as needed.
- Conduct research and analysis and prepare reports/recommendations on existing and potential clients, competitor activity, and market/industry trends.
- Support individual lawyers with business development and marketing efforts (e.g., thought leadership, social media, networking opportunities, referral tracking, and individual BD plans) by promoting internal capabilities and identifying opportunities to raise group profiles and cross-sell services.
- Support the Event Specialist in planning and executing client seminars, major events, and educational initiatives, including robust guest list analysis and management, materials, logistics, tracking and debriefs.
- Assist the national team with the implementation of internal training programs related to business-development and marketing.
- Review final written materials for quality, formatting, and compliance with firm brand standards.
- Contribute to the department’s budget tracking and invoice management.
Awards & Directories
- Lead or support directory, ranking, and awards submissions, including deadlines, drafting, approvals, and project tracking.
- Coordinate input, approvals, and finalization with BD directors, lawyers, and other stakeholders.
- Track key deadlines and follow the awards/directories planning calendar in close collaboration with the Marketing team.
Education, Experience and/or Demonstrated Skills
- 3-5+ years of progressive marketing or business development experience, preferably in a law firm or other professional services environment.
- University degree, preferably with a focus in business, communications, or a related field.
- Proficiency with MS Office and comfort with technology and collaboration tools.
- Strong project management skills, including the ability to multi-task, prioritize, communicate status updates, and meet deadlines with attention to detail and strong client service orientation.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, discretion, adaptability, and ability to manage confidential information.Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team, showing initiative and a hands-on approach; able to take ownership, learn quickly, and balance strategic thinking with tactical execution.
- Flexibility with respect to hours of work (including ability to work overtime).
