Job Summary
The General Accountant supports the day-to-day accounting function and month-end financial reporting process. The role includes general ledger accounting, reconciliations, journal entries, financial analysis, and supporting the accuracy and completeness of financial records.
The successful candidate will have a strong foundation in accounting principles, strong Excel skills, excellent attention to detail, and the ability to learn quickly and apply sound accounting judgment.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and post journal entries, accruals, prepaids, reclassifications, and other general ledger entries.
- Prepare balance sheet reconciliations and follow up on reconciling items.
- Support the month-end and year-end close processes.
- Review general ledger activity for accuracy and appropriate account classification.
- Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, payroll accounts, clearing accounts, and other balance sheet accounts.
- Assist with accounts payable and accounts receivable accounting and reconciliations.
- Support payroll accounting and related reconciliations.
- Prepare account analysis and supporting schedules for financial reporting.
- Assist with budget-to-actual and period-over-period variance analysis.
- Review financial information and investigate discrepancies or unusual balances.
- Maintain complete and organized accounting records and supporting documentation.
- Assist with year-end audit schedules and supporting documentation.
- Work with other departments to obtain information required for accounting and reporting.
- Support improvements to accounting processes and internal controls.
- Perform other accounting, payroll and financial analysis duties as required.
Qualifications and Skills
- Diploma or degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Strong understanding of accounting fundamentals, including:
- debits and credits;
- journal entries;
- accruals and prepaids;
- general ledger accounting;
- balance sheet accounts and reconciliations; and
- financial statement fundamentals.
- Strong Microsoft Excel skills, including:
- PivotTables;
- XLOOKUP or VLOOKUP;
- SUMIFS and commonly used formulas;
- filtering and sorting; and
- working with financial data.
- Strong numerical and analytical aptitude.
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Ability to learn new systems and processes quickly.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
