Position Overview:
The Controller is responsible for the integrity, accuracy, and timeliness of financial reporting across Canadian and U.S. operations spanning manufacturing and field service activities. This role leads all accounting functions including financial reporting, cost accounting, compliance, internal controls, and team leadership. The Controller ensures compliance with Canadian and U.S. regulatory requirements, oversees cross-border financial operations, and supports operational leadership with actionable financial insights.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Reporting & Close Process
- Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual close cycles for Canadian and U.S. entities.
- Prepare consolidated financial statements in accordance with Accounting Standards for Private Enterprises (ASPE and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).
- Coordinate U.S. subsidiary reporting in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (US GAAP).
- Oversee intercompany reconciliations and eliminations.
- Ensure accurate revenue recognition for project-based / engineered-to-order contracts, using Percentage of Completion and Completed Contract methods.
Cost & Manufacturing Accounting
- Oversee standard costing, job costing, and variance analysis.
- Monitor WIP (work-in-progress) valuation and inventory accuracy.
- Analyze material, labor, and overhead variances.
- Support margin analysis on projects.
- Collaborate with operations on cost containment and productivity initiatives.
Cross-Border & Regulatory Compliance
- Ensure compliance with:
- Canadian corporate tax regulations
- U.S. federal and state tax requirements
- Transfer pricing policies
- Oversee indirect taxes (GST/HST, PST, U.S. sales tax).
- Manage external audits and tax filings.
- Maintain compliance with Canadian and U.S. statutory reporting requirements.
Internal Controls & Governance
- Develop and maintain strong internal control frameworks.
- Implement process improvements to enhance financial accuracy and efficiency.
- Support risk management initiatives.
Cash Flow & Treasury Oversight
- Monitor cash flow forecasting.
- Manage banking relationships in both Canada and the U.S.
- Oversee foreign exchange exposure management.
- Support working capital optimization.
Leadership & Team Development
- Lead and mentor accounting staff (AP, AR, payroll, accounting).
- Establish performance standards and professional development plans.
- Foster a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
ERP & Systems Oversight
- Maintain integrity of financial data within ERP system.
- Oversee ERP configuration related to costing, inventory, and reporting as system subject matter expert.
- Lead system upgrades or implementations as required.
Qualifications:
Education & Credentials
- CPA designation (CPA Canada required).
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
Experience
- 7–10+ years progressive accounting experience.
- 3+ years in manufacturing environment.
- Experience with multi-entity consolidation and cross-border operations.
- Strong background in cost accounting and inventory management.
- Experience with ERP systems (SAP, Epicor, NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics, etc.).
Technical Competencies
- Strong knowledge of:
- ASPE
- IFRS
- US GAAP (preferred)
- Canadian and U.S. tax frameworks
- Advanced Excel and ERP system proficiency.
- Experience with revenue recognition for project-based contracts.
- Understanding of standard costing in manufacturing environments.
