Position Summary
The Childcare Director is responsible for the overall administration, supervision, and daily operation of the child day care center. The Director ensures compliance with all applicable legislation, standards, and policies while providing a safe, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate environment for children. The Director provides reports to the Board on a regular basis.
Regulatory Knowledge and Compliance
The Childcare Director must demonstrate a thorough understanding of, and ensure compliance with, the following documents:
- Child Day Care Facilities Operator Standards
- Day Care Regulation 83-85
- Child Victims of Abuse Protocols for the Province of New Brunswick
- Guide for Managing Potential Illness in Child Day Care Facilities in New Brunswick
- New Brunswick Curriculum Framework for Early Learning and Child Care
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Administration
Complete the annual renewal application for the Certificate of Approval (Standard 2.2).
- Ensure all child and staff files are complete, accurate, and up to date (Standards 3.3.1 and 9.1).
- Maintain required records, including but not limited to:
- Attendance records
- Management of Illness records for children and staff
- Posting requirements
- Fire drills and emergency procedures
- Smoke alarm and fire extinguisher inspections
- First aid kit checks
- Playground inspections
- Menu plans
- Incident and injury reports
- Medication administration records
- Insurance documentation
- Oversee financial management, including fees, expenses, payroll, and general funds.
2. Personnel Management
- Interview, hire, and orient new staff members.
- Provide staff with required policies, procedures, and documentation (Standard 3.3.1).
- Observe and evaluate staff performance during daily routines to ensure compliance with all standards.
- Plan and conduct regular staff meetings.
- Address staff concerns, conflicts, and grievances professionally and promptly.
- Ensure all staff are trained to recognize signs of abuse or neglect and understand their legal responsibility to document and report concerns to the Department of Social Development.
- Prepare and maintain staff job descriptions and assigned responsibilities.
3. Parent and Family Relations
- Respond promptly and professionally to telephone calls, emails, and correspondence.
- Welcome and orient parents and children to the center
- Address parent concerns and grievances in a respectful and timely manner.
- Communicate daily routines, activities, and child progress to families.
- Prepare and maintain parent policies, handbooks, and informational materials.
4. Daily Operations
- Maintain appropriate staff-to-child ratios at all times, including during staff breaks.
- Ensure the physical, emotional, social, and intellectual needs of all children are met.
- Implement and monitor the Early Learning and Child Care Curriculum.
- Ensure appropriate services are provided for children under Early Childhood Initiatives.
- Implement the Guide for Managing Potential Illness in Child Day Care Facilities, including proper handwashing and hygiene practices.
- Supervise meal planning and preparation to ensure nutritional and safety standards are met.
- Oversee maintenance, cleanliness, and repair of the building.
- Ensure proper maintenance, cleaning, and repair of equipment, furniture, and play materials.
5. Other Duties
Perform other related duties as assigned.

- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with sound judgment, tact, and discretion
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities
- Ability to develop and maintain professional working relationships with staff, families, and management
7. Physical Requirements and Work Environment
The role involves routine administrative tasks as well as daily operational challenges.
Childcare work is physically and emotionally demanding and requires standing, walking, bending, stooping, and lifting.
The Director must be enthusiastic, alert, energetic, and possess the physical stamina required to support children and staff throughout the day.
Pay: From $27.79 per hour
