Overview
We are seeking an experienced Lead Hand - Excavation to coordinate and support foreman on projects throughout the National Capital region . This leadership role requires a background in operating excavation equipment and construction processes, ensuring safety, efficiency, and quality standards are met. The ideal candidate will possess extensive knowledge of various machinery and excavation techniques, including skid steer, small excavator, and compaction equipment.
Tasks & Responsibilities
- Support the Foreman in overseeing daily excavation and site development activities, ensuring all work aligns with project plans, specifications, and safety regulations
- Operate small equipment and hand tools safely and efficiently to complete assigned tasks on site
- Assist in planning and coordinating daily work activities, including allocating labor, equipment, and materials to meet project timelines
- Perform routine inspections of tools and equipment; carry out basic maintenance and promptly report mechanical issues for repair
- Assist in grade checking and layout tasks using grade lasers and other surveying tools
- Ensure proper site preparation, grading, and excavation practices are carried out according to engineering drawings
- Enforce and promote strict adherence to safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements
- Maintain clear and consistent communication with the Foreman, crew members, and other trades on site
Employment Requirements:
- 3–5 years of experience in civil construction, with a focus on excavation, grading, or earthworks
- Valid certifications in Working at Heights, WHMIS, and OHSA 5-Step (or willingness to obtain)
- Proficiency in using grade lasers and other leveling or surveying equipment
- Ability to read, interpret, and follow engineered drawings, site plans, and specifications
- Experience operating small construction equipment (e.g., skid steer, mini excavator, plate tamper)
- Strong leadership and team supervision skills, with experience guiding crews on construction sites
- Solid understanding of construction safety regulations, standards, and best practices
- Effective communication and teamwork skills to coordinate with supervisors and coworkers
- Must possess CSA-approved safety boots and appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Valid PSPC Security Clearance (or ability to obtain)
