Canadian Mental Health Association – Thunder Bay Branch is a non-profit organization committed to supporting individual recovery and promoting mental wellness within families and communities throughout northwestern Ontario.
What is the job?
The Mental Health Worker works directly with assigned members of the program ensuring consistency with the goals and aims of the central theme of the program through membership work and wellness. The Mental Health Worker will follow the philosophy of creating and maintaining an intentional community, based on a partnership between members and staff.
What will you do day to day?
- Participate in the planning of daily, weekly, and monthly activities of the assigned unit
- Ensures member empowerment and the philosophy of Recovery form the basis of planning with individual members
- Participates in the planning of self-development/training and individual goal setting
- Data collection and recording of members’ files and ensuring files are current
- Completes forms and reports as directed
- Follows purchasing procedures as per Finance policy
- Works with and supports members in acquiring budgeting, hygiene, social and problem-solving skills, utilizing community resources, program rules and procedures, and vocational/education endeavors
- Facilitates housing members establishing realistic individual goals and their working towards these on an on-going basis
- Provides residential support services as assigned.
- Transports clients as required and directed
- Provides training and support to assigned members involved with Transitional Employment
- Liaises with community service providers to ensure members – needs are being met
- Performs outreach with unit members to ensure continual linkage with program
- Performs, identifies, and reports on the necessary duties required to ensure and maintain a healthy and safe group living and working environment
- Works with and supports volunteers and students as assigned
- Adhering to and promoting CMHA’s Code of Ethics Policy
- Complying with CMHA’s Health and Safety Policies
- Completes other duties as assigned
Qualifications and Characteristics:
- Diploma or Degree in the Health and Human Services
- Knowledge of Recovery principles
- Strong background working with individuals with mental illness
- Good knowledge of community health and other health related social service resources
- Must possess skills in crisis assessments, and intervention strategies and /or possess ASIST
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
- Good problem solving, team work, and counselling skills
- Computer and data entry skills
- Physically capable to perform job requirements
- Valid Class “G” Driver’s License with reliable vehicle and 2 Million Liability Insurance
- Police Vulnerable Sector Clearance
- Ability to speak French considered an asset
- Legally eligible to work in Canada
