Location: Base is Whitecourt, Alberta. Multiple locations across Alberta.
Martushev Logging Ltd. is seeking an experienced and safety-conscious Lowbed Operator to support our forestry, civil, transportation, and equipment operations. The successful candidate will be responsible for safely transporting heavy equipment between project sites, shops, yards, and customer locations. This position requires a skilled professional who understands equipment weights, dimensions, load securement requirements, permitting, and the safe operation of various truck and trailer configurations.
Key Responsibilities
- Transport heavy equipment, including forestry, construction, and earthmoving equipment.
- Operate lowbed trucks and multiple trailer configurations based on the size, weight, and type of equipment being moved.
- Safely load, secure, transport, and unload equipment.
- Select the appropriate trailer configuration for each load.
- Confirm equipment weights, axle weights, overall dimensions, clearances, and route restrictions before transport.
- Ensure all loads comply with applicable transportation regulations and permit requirements.
- Obtain and manage oversize and overweight permits when qualified to do so.
- Complete accurate pre-trip and post-trip inspections.
- Identify and report vehicle, trailer, equipment, and load-securement deficiencies.
- Inspect chains, binders, straps, blocking, and other securement devices before each trip.
- Complete required logbooks, electronic logs, permits, inspection reports, and transportation documentation.
- Plan routes while considering road restrictions, bridge limits, seasonal road bans, overhead clearances, and site access.
- Follow company safety policies, safe work procedures, and client requirements.
- Communicate effectively with dispatch, supervisors, equipment operators, and site personnel.
- Maintain assigned trucks and trailers in a clean and professional condition.
- Assist with other transportation or operational duties when required.
Qualifications
- Valid Class 1 driver’s licence with a satisfactory commercial driver’s abstract.
- Previous lowbed, heavy-haul, or equipment-transportation experience.
- Experience loading and unloading forestry, construction, or heavy equipment.
- Knowledge of load securement standards and transportation regulations.
- Strong understanding of axle weights, gross vehicle weights, equipment dimensions, and load distribution.
- Ability to safely operate different truck and trailer configurations.
- Ability to complete detailed pre-trip and post-trip inspections.
- Experience pulling oversize and overweight permits is considered an asset but is not required.
- Ability to read and understand permits, maps, route restrictions, and equipment specifications.
- Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and make safe decisions in changing conditions.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and out-of-town assignments when operationally required.
Preferred Experience
- Forestry equipment transportation.
- Transportation of excavators, dozers, loaders, skidders, processors, bunchers, graders, rock trucks, and similar heavy equipment.
- Experience with lowboys, step decks, jeep and booster configurations, and other specialized heavy-haul trailers.
- Experience operating in forestry, oilfield, civil construction, or remote work environments.
- Familiarity with Alberta oversize and overweight permitting requirements.
Safety ExpectationsThe successful candidate must demonstrate a strong commitment to safety and be able to:
- Properly assess each load before transportation.
- Confirm equipment is positioned and secured correctly.
- Recognize hazards relating to weight, dimensions, road conditions, and site access.
- Stop work when conditions are unsafe.
- Wear all required personal protective equipment.
- Immediately report incidents, near misses, equipment deficiencies, and unsafe conditions.
- Follow all company, client, and regulatory requirements.
