Overview
Sanitec Wastewater Systems is seeking an experienced Excavator Operator with a strong background in wastewater and septic system installation. This is not a production excavation position and it is not an entry-level opportunity.
We are looking for an operator who can arrive on site, review engineered plans, organize the work, communicate with labourers and subcontractors, and complete installations with minimal supervision.
The successful candidate will have extensive experience installing septic systems, wastewater treatment systems, pump chambers, force mains, disposal fields, and associated civil infrastructure.
This position is best suited to an operator who takes pride in their workmanship, understands grades and elevations, and has the confidence to run a project independently while maintaining a high level of quality and safety.
Responsibilities
- Operate excavators safely and efficiently on residential, commercial, and wastewater projects.
- Install septic tanks, pump tanks, advanced treatment units, disposal fields, contour systems, sand filters, and associated piping.
- Read and interpret engineered septic and civil drawings.
- Establish grades and elevations using laser equipment.
- Direct labourers and coordinate daily site activities.
- Complete projects in accordance with Nova Scotia Environment regulations and approved designs.
- Conduct daily equipment inspections and routine maintenance.
- Communicate professionally with homeowners, engineers, inspectors, and project managers.
- Identify site issues and develop practical solutions while maintaining project timelines.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and professional work site.
Required Experience
- Minimum 5 years excavator operating experience.
- Extensive wastewater, septic, underground utility, or civil construction experience.
- Proven ability to independently complete wastewater installations from layout through final grading.
- Experience installing tanks, distribution systems, pump systems, and disposal fields.
- Ability to read and understand engineered site plans.
- Experience working with grades, elevations, and laser equipment.
- Strong understanding of safe excavation practices.
Assets
- NSE Certified Installer.
- QP1 or QP2 Certification.
- Experience with advanced treatment systems such as Norweco, Waterloo Biofilter, Bionest, or similar technologies.
- Class 3 License.
- Experience operating skid steers, loaders, and other construction equipment.

We are not looking for someone who simply operates an excavator.
We are looking for someone who understands wastewater construction, can make sound decisions on site, takes ownership of their work, and can represent the company professionally when working independently.
The ideal candidate is the type of operator who can be handed a set of plans, a machine, and a labourer and confidently complete the project to a high standard.
Pay: $24.90-$42.40 per hour
