ABOUT THE POSITION
The Director of Engineering oversees all mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and structural operations of the Club’s facilities to ensure a safe, functional, and high-quality environment for members, guests, and staff. The role manages a team of Maintenance Technicians and is responsible for the preventive maintenance, repair, and efficient operation of all systems in a complex, multi-strata building, including HVAC, elevators, kitchen equipment, fire safety and refrigeration. The Director of Engineering also manages the strategic planning for facilities-related projects and capital reserve expenditures.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead, supervise, and develop a team of Maintenance Technicians.
- Oversee daily assignments, prioritize work orders, and ensure timely and professional completion of tasks.
- Coordinate with Club leadership and department heads to schedule maintenance and minimize operational disruptions.
- Manage vendor relationships, service contracts, and oversee contractors performing work on Club premises.
- Monitor and manage departmental budget, including procurement of parts, supplies, and equipment.
- Implement training programs for Maintenance team on safety standards, preventive maintenance, and operational procedures.
- Maintain compliance with all local, provincial, and federal regulations (e.g., OHSA, City of Vancouver By-Laws, fire codes, building codes).
- Respond to emergency maintenance calls during and after hours as needed.
- Participate in long-range planning for capital improvements and facility upgrades.
- Prepare reports and updates for club leadership regarding facility status, maintenance schedules, and capital project progress.
- Serve as a key member of the club’s safety committee.
REQUIRED SKILLS
- Strong technical and mechanical knowledge of building systems, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and fire/life safety.
- Proven hands-on leadership and team management skills.
- Excellent problem-solving abilities and the capacity to diagnose complex technical issues.
- Strong organizational and project management skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with internal stakeholders and external contractors.
- Solid understanding of budgeting, cost control, and preventive maintenance programs.
- Proficient with MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), building management systems and maintenance management software.
- Strong communication skills (written and verbal) with an ability to clearly convey ideas with a commitment to high standards of customer service and professionalism.
- Must be able to evaluate and select among alternative courses of action quickly and accurately.
- Must maintain composure and objectivity while working in stressful, high-pressure situations.
- Demonstrated ability to assimilate complex information, data, etc. from disparate sources and consider, adjust or modify to meet the constraints of the particular need.
- Experience with digital data control systems (DDC) would be considered an asset.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- 4th Class Power Engineer certificate required, 3rd Class would be considered an asset.
- High school diploma or GED required; Associate degree or trade school certification in engineering, facilities management, or a related field preferred.
- Minimum of 7–10 years of experience in building engineering, with at least 3 years in a supervisory or management role.
- Stationary Engineer License and/or other applicable certifications (e.g., HVAC, Electrical, Plumbing) preferred.
- Experience managing facilities for Private Clubs, hotels, or similar high-end hospitality environments highly desirable.
- Must have a valid driver's license.
- First Aid training considered an asset.
