Investigator – Calgary
The Alberta Motor Vehicle Industry Council (AMVIC) is Alberta’s automotive industry regulator. AMVIC is a public agency accountable to the Minister of Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction and the Government of Alberta. AMVIC protects consumers and industry from unfair practices in the automotive business industry. Consumer protection and a fair marketplace are achieved through AMVIC-managed mandatory licensing for automotive businesses and salesperson registrations as required by the Consumer Protection Act. AMVIC works to uphold industry standards through education of licensees and consumers.
AMVIC is responsible for the enforcement of the Consumer Protection Act, Automotive Business Regulation and related automotive regulations in the province of Alberta. Investigators are responsible for investigating consumer and industry complaints relating to the motor vehicle industry in Alberta, including automotive and recreational vehicle sales, repair and service. AMVIC is also responsible for investigating fraudulent activities in the motor vehicle industry.
This is a permanent full-time Investigator position based in Calgary, Alberta. The ideal candidate is an experienced investigator from any industry sector who can independently conduct and document investigations while working effectively with the general public, businesses, industry associations, and law enforcement agencies.
The position reports to the Manager of Investigations, South based in the Calgary office. The Investigations department consists of the Senior Manager of Investigations, two Managers of Investigations (North and South), a team of full-time investigators and an Investigations Coordinator. The position will be home based, Monday to Friday, and requires some overnight travel to communities in Alberta. Established performance matrix and accountabilities are monitored and reviewed with the incumbent on a regular basis. On occasion overtime may be required to meet job demands with prior approval from Manager of Investigations, South.
Responsibilities will include:
- Conduct all investigations fairly and objectively and in accordance with the requirements of the Consumer Protection Act and Regulations, Criminal Code of Canada, Traffic Safety Act, Canada Evidence Act, Provincial Offences Procedure Act and the Protection of Privacy Protection Act (POPA) and Access to Information Act (ATIA).
- Conduct all investigations and enforcement activities in accordance with AMVIC policies in a timely fashion.
- Investigate consumer and industry complaints.
- Network with municipal business licensing offices, Bylaw Officers and police services on a regular basis.
- Identify unlicensed businesses and salespeople and take appropriate action.
- Promote AMVIC’s mission and mandate in all communication with consumers and stakeholders of the automotive industry.
- Submit reports on emerging issues and enforcement activity as required by the Manager of Investigations north and/or south, for the monthly and quarterly reports submitted by the Senior Manager of Investigations.
- Assume Manager of Investigations (North or South) responsibilities for extended periods of time (more than 8 weeks)
- Experience investigator - trainer role – accept as trainer for newly hired investigators for extended period (more than 8 weeks)
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and technical skills:
- Successful completion of post-secondary diploma or degree in law, business, finance or related field or a journeyman certification.
- Minimum five years’ experience as an investigator in a law enforcement environment, inspector/Investigator in a regulatory compliance environment, OR combination of law enforcement, regulatory and experience in the automotive industry.
- Knowledge of Alberta’s Consumer Protection Act; Automotive Business Regulation; Cost of Credit Disclosure Regulation; Internet Sales Contract Regulation; Alberta Traffic Safety Act; Criminal Code of Canada; Canada Evidence Act; Alberta Peace Officer Act; andthe Protection of Privacy Protection Act and Access to Information Act
- Complete the Peace Officer training requirements and maintain Peace Officer status
- Conducting investigations and taking of formal statements
- Understanding of all court procedures, including exhibit handling
- Practical workings of the automotive industry
- Experience working with major case files.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Strategic approach to problem solving
- Computer skills with above average keyboarding skills
- Self-motivated and able to manage time and workload pressures independently
- Ability to work in a team environment
- Ability to network professionally with the public, automotive industry stakeholders, law enforcement and Government agencies

- Experience and ability to organize large investigative files
- Experience in working with Legislation, Acts and regulations
- Ability to work from home (home office)
