About the Role
The Camp Treasurer is the financial backbone of Surprise Lake Camp. You’ll help make sure finance and accounting run smoothly and in compliance with needed standards—so the board and auditors have the needed information related to finance to appropriately guide key decisions. This role works closely with the Board and is key to keeping the camp sustainable, compliant and financially viable.
Core Responsibilities (What You’ll Do)
- Financial Oversight:
- Monitoring the financial position and ensuring it remains viable and solvent.
- Receive all monies paid to the Society and deposit all monies in the selected financial institution.
- Pay and record all approved bills/invoices submitted
- Budgeting & Planning:
- Leading the preparation of annual budgets and comparing actual spending against projections to identify risks.
- Present an annual budget for approval at the AGM

- Reporting:
- Present clear, accurate financial reports (balance sheets, cash flow) at board meetings and the Annual General Meeting (AGM).
- Properly receipt and record all monies as required
- Keep and maintain the employment records for all paid staff
- Present a fully detailed account of receipts and disbursements to the Board whenever required
- Internal Controls:
- Establishing and enforcing policies to prevent fraud, such as requiring two signatures for checks or setting spending limits.
- Compliance & Filings:
- Ensuring the Society meets all legal obligations, including filing tax returns
- Have the books audited annually by an appointed auditor
- Present an audited financial report to the AGM for approval
- Fundraising Strategy:
- Advising on the financial implications of fundraising efforts and ensuring the use of funds complies with donor restrictions.
Key Skills & Qualifications (Who We're Looking For)
- Financial Literacy: A strong understanding of accounting principles (specifically for Societies and Non-Profits).
- Strategic Thinking: Ability to look beyond the numbers to the long-term sustainability of the Society's mission.
- Communication: Capacity to translate complex financial jargon into simple terms for non-financial board members.
- Attention to Detail: Precision in record-keeping and identifying discrepancies in financial data.
- Integrity: High ethical standards are mandatory as the role involves managing Society and donor funds.
Time Commitment
- Varies by season—busier during summer months and AGM time (typically 1 meeting/month)
- Most tasks are flexible and can be done from home
- You’ll have plenty of support from the Board
