Mishka Social Services is a Hamilton-based nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting newcomers, immigrants, refugees, and racialized communities. Through culturally responsive programs, settlement support, and community resources, we help individuals navigate the challenges of settling in Canada with confidence and dignity.
Position Summary
The Mishka Social Services Board of Directors is the organization's governing body. It oversees the organization's activities and ensures that it operates in accordance with its mission, values, and goals. A Board Member has a fiduciary responsibility to act in the organization's best interests and must participate in developing and implementing the organization's strategic plan, ensuring it aligns with the organization's mission, values, and goals. They also play an active role in promoting the organization in the community and must work to build relationships with key interest-holders.
We are seeking a detail-oriented and collaborative individual with financial and accounting knowledge to join our Board as Board Director with Assistant Treasurer responsibilities. The Assistant Treasurer supports the Treasurer and the Board in overseeing the organization’s financial health, ensuring transparency, accountability, and adherence to financial policies and regulatory requirements. This role is ideal for someone with financial acumen who is passionate about community impact.
Key Responsibilities
- Attend regular (monthly) and ad hoc Board meetings – Meetings are mostly virtual, with 2 in-person meetings annually in the Hamilton Area.
- Participate actively in Board meetings and strategic planning initiatives
- Uphold fiduciary duties and governance responsibilities as a Board member
- Promote Mishka Social Services among the community and interest-holders
- Assist the Treasurer in oversight of financial records, budgets, and reporting
- Support preparation of regular financial statements for Board review
- Help monitor cash flow, expenses, and financial performance
- Assist in developing and tracking annual budgets
- Support compliance with financial policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements
- Participate in audits and financial reviews as needed
- Step in for the Treasurer when required
Qualifications & Skills
- Background in accounting, finance, bookkeeping, or related field (or equivalent
- experience)
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Familiarity with financial reporting and basic accounting principles
- Experience with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Excel) is an asset
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive financial information
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Prior nonprofit or board experience is an asset
Time Commitment
An average time commitment of 1 hour per week to review material and fulfil responsibilities listed above, including completing financial transactions as requested by the Treasurer.
