About the Client:
We're seeking a compassionate caregiver for an 86-year-old gentleman living in assisted living in Burlington. He values his independence but needs support with personal care and daily activities. He has memory challenges and can be resistant to help, particularly with showering and hygiene tasks. He responds best to familiar faces and clear communication, and has difficulty understanding heavy accents due to hearing challenges. He tends to sleep during the day and would benefit from mental stimulation and engagement. The staff at his residence know him well and appreciate his personality, though he can be stubborn when he doesn't want to do something.
Responsibilities:
- Facilitate weekly showers using patience and proven strategies to work through resistance
- Provide toileting and hygiene support with dignity and respect
- Assist with changing clothes as needed
- Offer memory prompts and gentle redirection for cognitive support
- Provide mental stimulation through conversation, music, or other engaging activities
- Build a trusting relationship as a consistent, familiar presence
What We're Looking For:
- Experienced PSW with strong personal care skills
- Proven ability to work with clients who are resistant to care
- Excellent strategies for building rapport and encouraging cooperation
- Clear, articulate communication style (important due to client's hearing challenges)
- Calm, patient demeanor with positive energy
- Takes initiative and respects client independence
- Reliable and consistent with strong communication with family
- Experience supporting clients with memory challenges
Schedule:
Flexible schedule with 2-3 visits per week totaling 4-6 hours weekly. One visit will focus on the shower routine which takes considerable time due to the client's pace. Time of day is flexible and can be arranged to suit both caregiver and client needs. The family is looking for someone who can start as soon as the right match is found and commit to consistent, ongoing support.
