Newmont North America operations are located in British Columbia, Ontario, and Quebec with roles in operations, projects, and exploration. Regional Support is provided from our office in Vancouver.
As Principal Legal Counsel, Projects, you will be the lead legal partner supporting Newmont’s major projects portfolio across North America, serving as the primary point of contact for project-related legal matters. You will provide strategic and practical legal guidance that enables successful project delivery while managing contractual, commercial, and legal risks across some of Newmont’s most significant growth and capital projects.

Lead the drafting, review, and negotiation of complex project and construction agreements, including EPC/EPCM, engineering, consulting, supply, logistics, and services contracts as well as collaborate with local / regional legal colleagues from time to time.

Provide legal support throughout the project lifecycle, from studies and feasibility through execution, commissioning, and closeout.

Partner closely with project, commercial, procurement, engineering, finance, and operational teams to support project objectives.

Identify and mitigate legal and contractual risks while balancing commercial and operational priorities.

Advise on claims management, contract performance issues, dispute avoidance, and early resolution strategies.

Act as the primary legal point of contact for North American projects, while collaborating and influencing stakeholders across regional and global teams.

Influence and build strong relationships across multiple functions and regions to drive project outcomes in a highly collaborative environment.

Support the development of consistent contracting frameworks, governance standards, and legal best practices across Newmont’s global projects portfolio.

Bachelor of Laws (or equivalent law degree) and admission to practice law in a relevant jurisdiction.

Senior post-qualification legal experience supporting projects, construction, infrastructure, mining, energy, or similar capital-intensive industries.

Proven experience drafting, reviewing, and negotiating complex EPC, EPCM, engineering, construction, or project-related contracts.

Strong knowledge of contract law, risk allocation, claims management, and large project delivery frameworks.

Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage a high-volume workload, and coordinate stakeholders across multiple projects and jurisdictions.

Strong relationship-building and influencing skills, with the ability to achieve results through collaboration rather than direct authority.
This is a permanent, hybrid position supporting Newmont's North American Projects portfolio. The preferred location is Vancouver, Canada, also Denver, Colorado is available with regular collaboration across project, commercial, and legal teams. You will be joining a newly established global projects legal function focused on supporting strategic growth projects and driving consistency across Newmont's worldwide operations
The expected salary range for this role is CAD $ 153,600.00 - 219,400.00. This range is tied to the British Columbia market for jobs performed in British Columbia. The salary offer to the successful candidate will be based on job-related education, training, and/or experience. The salary offer will not be based on a candidate’s pay history at other jobs, and by law, Newmont will not seek information about pay history, and candidates should not share such information with Newmont.
