About the Client:
We're seeking a compassionate caregiver to support a client in Pembroke recovering from shoulder surgery. The client is right-handed and will have their arm in a sling for six weeks, limiting their ability to perform daily tasks independently. They live on a military base with two small dogs (a Pomeranian and a Beagle mix, one of whom is diabetic requiring insulin). The client has previous experience receiving care and is looking for reliable support during their recovery period.
Responsibilities:
The caregiver will assist with personal care and household tasks that the client cannot manage with one arm. Primary duties include:
- Bathing assistance and helping with dressing
- Meal preparation, including chopping vegetables and food prep (client cannot use a knife with their non-dominant hand)
- Light housekeeping: sweeping, mopping, and general tidying
- Laundry services
- Providing support during morning routines
- Being comfortable around small dogs in the home
The client will need the most intensive support during the first few weeks of recovery, with needs potentially decreasing as healing progresses. The client has a friend providing care for the first week post-surgery, so caregiver support will begin after that initial recovery period.
What We're Looking For:
- Experience with post-surgical care and personal care assistance
- Ability to help with bathing and dressing while respecting client dignity and independence
- Meal preparation skills, particularly with safe food handling and knife work
- Comfort performing light housekeeping duties
- Reliability and consistency in showing up for scheduled shifts
- English-speaking
- Comfortable working in a home with small dogs
- Patient and understanding approach to working with someone adjusting to temporary physical limitations
The ideal caregiver will be adaptable as the client's needs may change throughout the recovery process. The client is still determining their exact care requirements and may need to adjust the schedule based on how they feel and whether they return to work during recovery.
Schedule:
The position will begin approximately one week after the client's surgery (early June 2026). The anticipated schedule is:
- 3 days per week
- 3 hours per visit
- Morning shifts preferred (to assist with showering, dressing, and morning meal prep)
- Total of 9 hours per week
This is a month-to-month commitment with a recurring weekly schedule. The client has funding through a military program for three months of care, with potential for extension if needed. Schedule consistency is important, as the client will be recovering at home and may have limited mobility to appointments.
Location: Pembroke (near military base). Note that there is no public transportation in the area, and the caregiver will not be expected to provide transportation services.
