Position Overview
The Tax and Financial Accounting Director is responsible for overseeing all tax compliance, planning, and reporting across Harlo Capital's portfolio of 140+ entities. This role is the primary owner of corporate and partnership tax filings, year-end financial statement preparation, investor tax reporting, and tax strategy development. The Tax and Financial Accounting Director works cross-functionally with finance, legal, investor relations, and external advisors to ensure timely and accurate tax compliance.
Key Responsibilities
Corporate & Partnership Tax Compliance
- Prepare and file T2 corporate income tax returns for all Harlo holding companies, GP entities, and operating companies
- Prepare and file T5013 partnership information returns for all limited partnerships
- Prepare and file T5 slips (investment income statements) for relevant entities
- Prepare and file NR4 returns for non-resident investors
- File HST/GST returns and manage SLFI (Selected Listed Financial Institution) returns
- Manage US tax compliance including state filings (NYS, PA), franchise tax, 1099s, BOI reporting, and extension filings
- File Land Transfer Tax (LTT) as required on property transactions
- Manage T4/payroll tax compliance and ensure accuracy of year-end payroll reporting
Year-End & Financial Reporting
- Lead annual year-end process across all entities (Dec 31, Feb 28, Jun 30, Jul 31 year-ends)
- Prepare financial statements for fund entities and corporate vehicles
- Coordinate income and expense allocation across GP/LP structures including promote calculations
- Manage tax estimate calculations and installment payments
- Maintain and update tax attribute dashboards for executive visibility
- Oversee property valuations for year-end tax purposes (Diversified Canadian Real Estate Trust)
Tax Planning & Advisory
- Develop and execute tax strategies including guarantee fee structures, capital loss utilization, and Section 97 rollovers
- Advise on Part IV tax recovery and capital dividend account optimization
- Analyze EIFEL (Excessive Interest and Financing Expenses Limitation) impact on fund structures
- Evaluate tax implications for international investors (European, UAE, Swedish, US)
- Support capital call structuring and loan vs. equity classification decisions
- Provide guidance on entity structuring (holdco vs. opco capitalization, amalgamations, wind-ups)
- Prepare tax memos and one-pagers for investor communications
Investor Tax Reporting
- Upload T5013 slips to Investor Management System (IMS)
- Respond to investor and advisor requests for tax documentation
- Prepare year-end analysis on a tax basis for key stakeholders
- Draft investor communications explaining tax treatments (capital losses, withholding, distributions)
External Advisor Management
- Coordinate with external accounting firms on audits, tax opinions, and filings
- Review and manage external advisor invoices and WIP
- Liaise with CRA on notices, reassessments, and refund requests
- Manage relationships with legal counsel on tax-related matters
Qualifications Required
- CPA designation (CA, CMA, or CGA)
- 5-7+ years of progressive tax experience, preferably in real estate or private equity
- Deep knowledge of Canadian corporate and partnership taxation (T2, T5013, T5, NR4)
- Experience with multi-entity corporate structures (GP/LP, holdcos, ULCs)
- Strong understanding of HST/GST in a real estate context
- Experience managing year-end processes for multiple entities
- Proficiency with CRA online portals and filing systems
Preferred
- Completed or pursuing CPA In-Depth Tax Course (Parts I-III)
- Experience in a fund administration or asset management environment
- Familiarity with IFRS and ASPE reporting
- Experience with investor management systems (IMS) and tax slip distribution
- Comfort with AI/automation tools for tax process improvement
- Experience with US tax compliance (state filings, franchise tax, cross-border structures)
Process & Technology
- Implement and maintain tax compliance workflows and checklists
- Leverage AI tools to improve year-end efficiency (tax form verification, slip checking)
- Evaluate and implement accounting software solutions (e.g., Yardi)
- Create and maintain process documentation for recurring tax activities
- Establish dashboard reporting cadence for tax matters
Reporting & Collaboration
- Reports to the Chief Financial Officer
- Works closely with Finance & Accounting, Investor Relations, and Legal teams
- Manages relationships with 4-5 external accounting/tax advisory firms
- Supervises junior accounting staff on tax-related workpapers
Pay: $125,000.00-$150,000.00 per year
