Shift / Schedule: 37.5 hours/week, 9:00 AM 5:00 PM, Monday to Friday; overtime possible during March and April

Reporting to the Director, Tax Services, the Senior Tax Specialist / Manager will be responsible for managing new and junior staff, conducting training sessions, preparing complex tax returns, and overseeing/reviewing tax returns. This role ensures effective and timely completion for complex Estate and Trust accounts and fulfills a variety of income tax compliance, planning, and administrative functions. The individual will be dealing with returns for clients that have passed away, with no customer contact involved in this role. The priority within the first 90 days is understanding systems and workflow, and the business.

- Client Engagement: Understand the business structure and associated risks. Gather relevant information for complex tax return preparation.

Compliance Identification: Assign and review compliance obligations in a timely manner. Perform calculations, complete required schedules, and organize information for complex returns without additional oversight. Review client accounts to ensure compliance obligations are filed on time, ensuring credit optimization and all reporting obligations are met.

Relationship Building: Liaise with the Tax team, Trust staff, outside tax professionals, and clients to ensure that income tax filing requirements for more complex returns are met on a timely basis; that taxation issues are explained and resolved; and that tax strategies are implemented effectively.

Subject Matter Expertise: Apply technical expertise in estate and trust taxation. Accurately review personal, Estate, and Trust income tax returns and schedules. Identify post-mortem and other tax planning opportunities. Act as a technical tax resource to the Executive Trust Associate Team and tax team personnel. Review assessment notices and prepare adjustment, objection notices, and Clearance Certificate requests for filing. Correspond with the CRA to ensure any requests for information are provided. Review complex tax returns such as GREs, terminal T1 returns, and rights or things.

Leadership Capabilities: Participate in special projects as assigned. Manage and train junior staff. Take ownership of assigned projects with limited supervision.

Support review and oversight of junior staff, with similar leadership experience and expertise being important.

Support individuals who have lost capacity; T1 terminals and their estates and testamentary trusts are typical.

Prepare and review T1, T1 Terminal/Final, T3 Trusts/Estate, GREs, Rights & Things, and Clearance Certificates.

Utilize CRA RepID, tax preparation platforms, and other required systems.

Prepare working paper files electronically.

Assist with outsourcing of tax returns and identification of tax planning opportunities.

- 3 5 years of experience in an accounting or tax-related role

Familiarity with graduated rate estates, including their benefits

Experience with preparation of T1 returns

Experience with preparation of T1 terminal (final) returns

Experience with preparation of T3 trusts and estate returns

Tax prep software experience; must be proficient with Taxprep software

- Post-secondary degree or diploma in Accounting or equivalent

CPA/CA designation with current accreditation and good standing in STEP, CSI, or Taxation Courses is an asset

Demonstrated experience helping to manage workloads, taking full ownership, working independently, and preparing and reviewing tax returns (T1, T1 terminal/final, T3 trusts and estate returns)

Overtime is possible, particularly during March and April

- Interview process consists of three rounds: (1) a ~15-minute screening with basic technical questions; (2) a 1-hour in-person or monitored-call case study test focused on deceased taxpayer scenarios; (3) a ~15-minute behavioral screening with the hiring manager and another member of the line of business.

The contractor will require access to specific systems including CRA RepID, tax preparation platforms, and internal systems.

There is no customer contact involved in this role.
