General Contractor specializing in commercial, industrial, and institutional projects. Also Residential certified. We are seeking a strategic, financially sharp Construction Business Manager to oversee project portfolios, optimize financial health, and lead our operational teams.
The Role:
As the Construction Business Manager, you will sit at the intersection of finance, contract law, and field operations. You will be responsible for the macro-management of multi-million-dollar project portfolios, ensuring maximum profitability, strict contract compliance, and bulletproof risk management from procurement to closeout.
Key Responsibilities:
- Financial Oversight: Manage comprehensive Work-in-Progress (WIP) reporting, cash flow forecasting, and overall portfolio gross margins. Oversee project budgets, job costing, cash flow, and financial reporting. Manage comprehensive Work-in-Progress (WIP) reporting, cash flow forecasting, and overall portfolio gross margins. Review progress draws, holdbacks, and subcontractor payments, and support forecasting and annual budgeting.
- Contract & Risk Management: Administer complex prime contracts (including CCDC 2, 3, 5B) and negotiate tight subcontractor buyout packages. Oversee contract administration for prime contracts, subcontracts, purchase orders, and change orders, including administration of complex CCDC 2, 3, and 5B contracts. Negotiate subcontractor buyout packages, ensure contractual compliance, identify and mitigate project and business risks, manage insurance and bonding requirements, and support claims prevention and dispute resolution to protect the company's financial and operational interests.
- Change Management: Oversee the documentation, pricing, and negotiation of major change orders with institutional boards and corporate clients, ensuring accurate cost evaluation, contract compliance, and successful resolution of scope adjustments.
- Operational Leadership: Review Critical Path Method (CPM) schedules to mitigate delays, resolve resource bottlenecks, and prevent liquidated damages.
- Stakeholder Diplomacy: Act as the primary liaison between corporate executives, institutional clients, architects, engineers, and regulatory authorities. Serve as the primary liaison between executives, clients, consultants, design teams, and regulatory authorities to maintain strong relationships, facilitate communication, and align project goals and expectations.
- Operations Management: Oversee daily business and office operations to ensure efficient project delivery. Develop and improve operational processes, monitor project progress, support project managers with scheduling and resource planning, coordinate communication among field staff, clients, consultants, and subcontractors, and review Critical Path Method (CPM) schedules to mitigate delays, resolve resource bottlenecks, and prevent the risk of liquidated damages.
- Human Resources & Administration: Oversee payroll, employee records, hiring, and onboarding while supporting staff development, performance management, and maintaining office policies and procedures.
- Compliance: Ensure compliance with construction regulations and safety requirements, maintain company licenses and insurance, and support quality control and risk management initiatives.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Experience:
- 7+ years of management experience specifically within commercial, industrial, or institutional general contracting.
- Strong understanding of construction accounting, job costing, and project financial management.
- Education: Degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Business Administration, or a related field (PQS or PMP designation is an asset).
- Contract Fluency: Expert-level knowledge of Canadian construction law, CCDC contracts, bonding processes, and public RFP procurement laws.
- Technical Savvy: Advanced proficiency in construction management software (e.g., Procore, Sage 100) and corporate accounting/WIP tracking tools.
- Leadership: Proven ability to navigate multi-stakeholder conflicts and manage diverse, high-performing project teams.
Pay: $80,000.00-$100,000.00 per year
