Part-Time Custodial Worker – Job DescriptionPosition Overview
The Part-Time Custodial Worker is responsible for maintaining a clean, sanitary, safe, and welcoming environment for members and guests of the Bowmanville Older Adult Association. This role is primarily focused on custodial and cleaning responsibilities, while also assisting with light maintenance duties as needed.
The Part-Time Custodial Worker works collaboratively with the Full-Time Maintenance Worker and other part-time staff, and reports to the Maintenance Supervisor. This position is primarily evenings and Saturdays and Sundays, with occasional weekdays as required, and includes serving as front-of-house staff during weekend rentals.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities Custodial & Cleaning Responsibilities
- Follow daily and weekly cleaning routines throughout the facility.
- Clean and sanitize washrooms, including sinks, toilets, mirrors, counters, floors, and touchpoints.
- Sweep, vacuum, mop, and maintain floors throughout the building.
- Dust and clean common areas, program rooms, entrances, offices, and high-touch surfaces.
- Ensure garbage, recycling, and yard waste are collected and disposed of appropriately.
- Assist with dishwashing and kitchen cleaning as required.
- Restock cleaning and washroom supplies as needed.
- Help maintain a clean and organized garage, storage, and custodial areas.
- Monitor the overall cleanliness and appearance of the facility and address spills or messes promptly.
- Assist with seasonal deep cleaning tasks and detailed cleaning projects.
Facilities & Operations
- Set up and take down rooms for daily programs and events, including tables, chairs, and equipment.
- Support outdoor upkeep and basic grounds maintenance as assigned.
- Serve as front-of-house staff during facility rentals on Saturdays and Sundays, including:
- Welcoming renters and guests
- Providing customer service
- Opening and closing the facility
- Ensuring rental spaces are properly set up and maintained during events
- Lock and unlock the facility and arm/disarm the security system as required.
- Perform light maintenance tasks as needed, such as changing light bulbs, replacing filters, and completing minor repairs.
- Report maintenance concerns, safety hazards, or supply shortages to the Maintenance Supervisor.
- Other duties as assigned.
QualificationsEducation & Background
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Experience in custodial, janitorial, cleaning, labour, or maintenance-related work is considered an asset.
Skills & Requirements
- Ability to lift 40–50 lbs and complete physically demanding tasks.
- Ability to follow cleaning schedules, directions, and safety procedures accurately.
- Strong attention to cleanliness and detail.
- Reliable, dependable, and able to work independently.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Comfortable working in a busy community environment.
- Ability to work effectively with staff, volunteers, members, and leadership.
- Professional and positive representation of BOAA at all times.
- Flexibility to work primarily weekends (Saturdays and Sundays) and occasional weekday evenings.
- Comfortable performing front-of-house duties during rentals and events.
- Valid Ontario G Driver’s License and access to a vehicle for travel within Durham Region is an asset.
