Job Summary & Key Responsibilities
A part-time academic is needed to teach FREN 2020-01: Introduction to Linguistics, in the fall term of 2026-2027 academic year (September-December 2026). The course is scheduled on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 13:05-14:25.
Course Description:
Linguistics is the science of language. This course is designed to serve as an introduction to basic concepts in linguistics. The various subfields of linguistics will be introduced with a focus on the core areas of linguistics: phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics. Students will learn about the structure of language at different levels of organization: phonemes, syllables, words, phrases, and sentences.
The selected applicant will teach fundamental concepts regarding the nature of language and linguistic communication, and introduce students to phonetics and phonology, morphology and lexicology, syntax, semantics, and potentially sociolinguistics and pragmatics. The instructor will be responsible for all aspects of teaching and administering the class, including lectures, test preparation, evaluation and electronic submission of final grades. Ideally, the course will be taught in person, but if no suitable local candidate is available, the virtual synchronous format will be used.
Instructors are expected to maintain reliable and constant communication with the administration of the Department, to be available for two hours per week for consultation with students and to encourage students fill out the evaluation questionnaire at the end of the course. Instructors report to the Chairperson of the Department.
Qualifications/Requirements of Position
- A Ph.D. in French linguistics, plus previous teaching experience.
- Native or near-native competence in French.
